Spurs 3-0 Forest - report from Hotspur Way
Posted on 9 July 2016 - 14:38

Victor Wanyama picked up his first game time as a Spurs player as we saw off Nottingham Forest 3-0 in a behind-closed-doors friendly at Hotspur Way today (Saturday, July 9).

The Kenyan international started the game alongside Ryan Mason in central midfield as we got our pre-season campaign off and running in solid fashion against the Championship side, with Heung-Min Son, Tom Carroll and Alex Pritchard on target.

The match – which saw Mauricio Pochettino field a mixture of first team and Development Squad players – was only three minutes old when Son made his mark, winning the ball just outside the box on the right side and firing beyond Dorus de Vries from the angle. The Forest stopper did make contact with the ball but couldn’t keep it out.

A good start became even better four minutes later as youngster Luke Amos picked out Carroll with a cross from the right and the midfielder finished well with an innovative first-time, left-footed shot that flew inside the near post.

Forest’s best chance of the first half arrived just before the interval as Jamie Paterson’s low drive from the edge of the box coaxed a fine save from Michel Vorm, diving low to his right.

Britt Assombalonga had the ball in the net for the visitors five minutes into the second period but his effort was ruled out for off-side while, at the other end, Nacer Chadli (pictured, above) fired over the bar from 20 yards out.

We continued to control the possession as the game wore on with Harry Winks next to go close before Pritchard’s shot on the turn was kept out by Forest’s young substitute goalkeeper Jordan Smith.

Nabil Bentaleb saw a drilled, left-footed effort tipped low around the post as we kept the pressure on in the closing stages, with our third goal arriving two minutes from time.

Bentaleb was again involved as his deft flick over the Forest back line was latched onto by Pritchard. The ball ran slightly wide for the attacker as he turned onto it but he adapted well and crashed his shot low inside the far post from the right side of the box to round off the win.

Vincent Janssen was denied a last-minute equaliser by a fingertip save from Fulham goalkeeper Jesse Joronen as we met the Cottagers in a training ground friendly this afternoon (Saturday, July 16).
The striker’s near-post flick from Nacer Chadli’s cut-back was pushed beyond the far upright by Joronen at full-stretch as we tried to recover from conceding to Luca de la Torre moments earlier at Hotspur Way.

Ultimately it stayed 1-0 to the visitors but Mauricio Pochettino was able to run the rule over a number of Development Squad members over the 90 minutes, once again choosing to field a combination of senior and young players in the pre-season exercise.

The first period saw us move the ball around nicely without finding a way to penetrate the Fulham defence. Teenage centre-half Cameron Carter-Vickers was strong at the back for us while Nabil Bentaleb exhibited some tidy footwork and clever forward passes in search of Alex Pritchard, but the Cottagers stood firm.

Kieran Trippier almost picked out Heung-Min Son with a cross-field ball from the right, but it ran behind at the far post before the South Korean star could reach it.

Cauley Woodrow’s deflected shot just after the half-hour mark had goalkeeper Michel Vorm scrambling low down to his right to tip wide while Floyd Ayité hammered the wrong side of the near post after ex-Spur Ryan Fredericks picked him out four minutes before the interval.

Another of our former players, Scott Parker, came on at the break as both sides made changes and again we played some neat football, Harry Winks shooting over the top before Shayon Harrison forced a fine save from Joronen with a left-footed half-volley out of nothing.

Chadli and Harrison again tried their luck with respective shots from distance before Fulham snatched the lead against the run of play on 88 minutes. Stephen Humphries’ cut-back from the left found de la Torre in space in the box and he drilled past substitute goalkeeper Luke McGee from 10 yards out.

In the 90th minute we almost found a response as new signing Janssen, picking up his first game time since his move from AZ Alkmaar earlier this week, was denied in impressive fashion by Joronen and, from the resulting corner, the goalkeeper pushed Harrison’s close-range effort up and over the bar – the last opportunity of the game.

Good finishes from Carroll and Pritchard in there. I'm hoping to see Pritchard at least get his chance this season along with more game time from Winks and Onomah. Onomah just seems to need that first goal to kickstart himself. Not sure on Tom Carroll. Obviously got a good touch, I just think he's not got enough oomph to hold down a spot. For the sake of his own career I think he needs to move on.

Pre season results mean absolutely nothing in relation to prospects for the upcoming season and yet people go mental when you don't thrash everyone. Players getting fit, up to match speed and some form of cohesion is all they're about.

There's been a bit of a meltdown on twitter over this squad. Did anyone really think any of the Euro 16 players would be going. One minute they're moaning that they need a rest, next they're complaining they're not flying half way round the world for an exhibition tour. Pritchard is the only surprise omission for me but maybe he's got a knock. Who knows. Certainly not us lot.

Juve have a pretty strong team out for this. Will be good to see how the boys we've selected deal with that team especially the CB's.

I am more up for seeing if they have the mindset,i understand they are not complete players (the kids) but do they have that Alli confidence to not feel out of their depth when facing good players.

I seem to have a memory of Alli nutmegging Toni Kroos in a friendly last summer, was it him or someone else? Anyway, the small bit's I saw of Alli last summer impressed me so if any of the young lads can step up like that it would be great!!!
