What happened to him... He looked like a world beater...!!!
He’s been good for Leeds every time I’ve seen them. I heard that Reguilon’s loan deal was pretty much intended to be January only. Wonder if the same is true of Spence. IMO Spence would be more likely to be able to play FB the Ange way. I guess they’ll both be loaned out somewhere else. Reggie I’m sure will find a taker, LBs don’t grow on trees.

Genoa transfer market, Stellini describes Djed Spence. He coached him at Tottenham

In view of Djed Spence 's arrival in the rossoblu , who will undergo medical examinations in the next few hours before officially becoming a Genoa player, we reached Cristian Stellini by telephone. The former Grifone defender and Antonio Conte's assistant in the Apulian coach's last experience at Tottenham coached the 2000-born winger at Spurs from summer 2022 to January 2023.

Cristian Stellini, captain of Genoa famous for that penalty that weighed like a boulder in the playoffs against Salernitana and who didn't back down on that occasion, who better than him can tell us about Spence? Explain it to us both tactically and temperamentally…

Hello to all Genoans. Spence is a very polite boy, very reserved. I would define him as very calm, with great explosiveness and great speed. The English league has a lot of these types of very physical talents. He is a 24 year old boy who has a lot of room for improvement, especially in the final phase of the action: both in finishing and in making assists. He definitely has to grow up, otherwise he wouldn't be so young. But he is a player with incredible physicality and great technical ability to play tight. Both from a standstill and at speed he can become dangerous. In the past he made a leap up the category a little too high, in the sense that he won a Serie B championship with Nottingham Forrest and found himself at Tottenham, in a very strong team. Genoa is a good opportunity for him and to demonstrate his talent . "

How can Gilardino use it? Even as fifth?

He is a player suited to playing both as a full back four and, with his speed, also as a high winger in a 4-4-2. Otherwise he is a perfect fifth in a five-man defense because with his speed he covers the entire field very well. Is he ready to join the Italian championship and with Genoa? It is important that he is welcomed in the right way. All foreigners, especially those arriving from England with a language defect, need some time. Above all the warmth of the people and the stadium, I think he went to the right place. Because the warmth of the Ferraris is second to none. If he had asked me for advice, I would definitely have told him to go to Genoa ."

Last question: what do you think of the Dragusin operation at Tottenham?

Dragusin is a very strong player. He has demonstrated that he has value and important characteristics. As it has been for many players, making such an important leap will take some time. We are certainly talking about an important prospect ."

Thanks captain. Do you remember that penalty?

Yes, of course I remember it (laughs, ed.). What if I tell you? I never get bored telling it, maybe people get bored listening to it. It was the 95th minute Marco Rossi goes down into the area, the referee blows the penalty. The very good boy Dante Lopez goes to get the ball, but I told him 'Dante, this is not your penalty but mine. The responsibility lies with me and so let me take the lead.' Then everything went well ."

Some interesting claims doing the rounds at the moment about Spence. Claims that he frequently turned up late to training and team meetings and also missed a club event which was a team visit to a Children's hospital at Christmas.

Seemingly no question about his attitude while he was working as he was said to be polite and respectful but his timekeeping was awful and that's the reason his loan was terminated.

Neil Warnock refused to manage him.

Said he was a chippy little cunt (paraphrasing) who's attitude for in the way of his ability.

This was from a Forrest fan about how he was way back then.

I don't imagine more money, and being treated like a diva will finish that.

Another few bits about him came out a few days ago. One that Conte apparently did speak to him a number of times during the initial transfer negotiations to convince him to join and subsequently told everyone at that press conference that he was a "club signing".

He was also said to be living next door to one of the club's technical staff who reported that he often heard loud music playing at his house late in to the night with regular parties occuring there as well.

He would often arrive at training "with minutes to spare" before, I assume, the deadline before he would be fined.

Why isn't this kid annihilating sides... Honestly, when we picked him up I thought it was one of the best signings at the time...

I hope Royal fucks off, he stays and gets a chance to show us all how good he can be.

I guess the main thing Emerson has going for him is that he can play CB. But I agree, I'd love to see Spence make it at the club, he just seems a player that would fit in with the rest of this group and maybe challenge Porro.

He was sensational at Forest... He gets near that and we have another serious wide player on our hands.

Shown signs of recovering that form, even though he's had to play on the left. This is a really good sign, you hate to see talented players slip through the cracks.

He has all the ingredients... He just needs playing time..
100%. Plus we need him. The way we play we need to rotate FBs almost like Poch used to do.

I'm really pleased that Djed Spence has finally got his head straight and knuckled down , focused his attention and sorted out his attitude . He was overlooked by 3 managers because his head wasn't in the right place . Now he's one of the first names on the team sheet . He has stood in for Udogie at LB , and done a great job . He has played at RB in place of Porro and is arguably the better of the 2 players . What a shame he didn't apply himself a few seasons ago , I guess better late than never . But "What A Player He Is Now"..............COYS

Conte disowned Spence, then 21, by labelling him an "investment of the club" following the defender's protracted £20million transfer, sealed on the back of Spence helping Nottingham Forest to promotion during a season on loan at the City Ground.
"It wasn’t a nice feeling," Spence told the Rio Ferdinand Presents podcast. "Especially as I was coming to the club on a high, I was confident, I was buzzing, had just won promotion.
"Then it was like running into a brick wall. It shattered my confidence a bit, obviously I’m young. It’s not nice to hear.
"I knew it was rubbish at the time. It wasn’t a nice feeling. I was even going into the club like [puffs out cheeks] and, ‘What am I doing?’”
“I feel like whatever I did, that man [Conte] wasn’t happy about anything," Spence added.
"Even if you did the right things, you were like, ‘Did I do the right thing?’ Cos he’s not really a complimenting guy.

"It gets to a point where you don’t really need validation from a coach. You just go, ‘Oh’.
"I probably had one conversation with him."

"When a new manager comes in you think, 'Alright, everyone's going to get a fair chance, he's going to have a look at everyone'," he said.

"With me, I don't think that was really the case. But that's part of the game of the game of football. Football's not fair.
"[Postecoglou] just said basically I need to go out and play and that's when I ended up going to Leeds.
"Sometimes you might not get a chance that you feel like you deserve. I've always known I was good enough. People say, 'It's good to see he's got a second chance and he's doing well'. I never really got the first chance.
"This is my first chance and I'm taking it. I'm just happy I worked hard, I stayed consistent and I was ready."

He added: “I feel like with Conte [training] was very repetitive. We would literally do the same situation every day. With Ange, it’s a bit different. We do change it. He switches it up every day."
But Spence admitted that he was not able to be himself on joining Spurs, claiming he was "too humble" and afraid to "express himself" after stepping up to the Premier League from the Championship.
"I think I’ve been a victim of being too humble," he said. "Thinking things are just going to happen by not doing nothing and not saying nothing. But sometimes you have to express yourself.
"In my first year at Tottenham, I feel I gave a bit too much respect to the players and the surroundings, because it’s Tottenham. I came from Forest, I’m going to the Premier League, a top-six club, and I thought, 'Phew, this is big'.
"I feel I gave them too much respect in regards I didn’t really be myself.
"When I went there, I saw players who were big names like Harry Kane and Sonny [Heung-min Son], and I didn’t want to step on anyone’s toes.
"But that was probably my biggest mistake, doing that and not expressing myself how I should have. I’d say this season [that's changed]. I’ve got no time to waste now. I’ve got to go get it, it’s time."

100%....thing is, he was always good enough. Just a pity it took a catastrophic injury list to prompt Ange to give him a shot. And before that we had a gaffer in Conte that got the hump and refused to even consider him because he was a "club signing".
All in all, brilliant management by the Dark Lord.

No reason why we can't be a regular in Tuchel's squad either. He merits it.
Delighted for the lad...
