The draw for the third round of the Carabao Cup takes place this evening (Wednesday 28 August).

As one of seven Premier League clubs playing in Europe this season, we will enter the competition at this stage – all other top-flight sides entered in round two.

The draw will take place live on Sky Sports, following the conclusion of the second-round tie between Nottingham Forest and Newcastle United. We will be represented by ball number 23.

Due to the scheduling of UEFA Champions League and Europa League games over two exclusive midweeks in September, special draw conditions will be implemented for this year’s Carabao Cup third round to ensure there is no clash of fixtures for participating sides.

Fixtures at this stage of the competition will take place in the weeks commencing 16 and 23 September. However, with Champions League ties being held in the former week and Europa League ties in the latter, special measures have been introduced to ensure that any club participating in the Champions League cannot draw a side participating in the Europa League, thus enabling all round three fixtures to take place in the alternate week. Clubs competing in the Europa Conference League are unaffected.

These conditions mean, as a club participating in this season’s Europa League, we cannot be drawn against Manchester City, Arsenal, Liverpool or Aston Villa at this stage of the competition.

For the draw, the 32 clubs in the hat will be separated into two bowls. Bowl one will consist of the six clubs participating in the Champions League and Europa League – including ourselves – with the remaining 26 clubs placed into bowl two. A pre-draw will take place prior to the Forest v Newcastle tie, also live on Sky Sports, to determine the home and away positioning of the six clubs in bowl one for the first six ties of the main draw.

During the subsequent main draw after the game at the City Ground, the first six ties will be drawn by alternating between one club from bowl one and one club from bowl two. Once the six clubs from bowl one have been drawn, the remaining ties will be drawn from bowl two only.

A full list of draw ball numbers and participating sides can be found below.

The draw for the third round of the Carabao Cup will take place on Wednesday at the conclusion of the second-round tie between Nottingham Forest and Newcastle United.

The seven English clubs involved in European competitions this season, including holders Liverpool, will enter at the third-round stage.

Ties will take place on weeks commencing 16 and 23 September.

Because there are rounds of Champions League and Europa League fixtures also scheduled for those two midweeks, the six clubs involved in those competitions - Manchester City, Arsenal, Liverpool, Aston Villa, Tottenham and Manchester United - will be kept apart to ensure they can fulfil their Carabao Cup tie in the alternate midweek to their European fixture.

Those six clubs will take part in a pre-draw before Forest v Newcastle to decide if they will be at home or away in the third round, with a main draw determining the 16 ties later in the evening.

If Ange don't take this seriously it could be an early exit. Playing too many fringe players is asking for trouble.

The League Cup is an awkward one for us, especially with draws like this. On the one hand we're desperate for a trophy, on the other we clearly have to get playing time for our younger players and the likes of Davies, Spence, etc., who will probably have to play in the PL (at some point) and Europe.

Personally, I'd say go with the kids and see what they can do. If we get to the later rounds, then put out a more or less first choice side. On the other hand, the FA Cup is a different proposition for me. All in to win that from the beginning.

I agree the kids would be nice to see but....Can't see Ange doing that. If he plays the kids and we got out to Coventry, the backlash will be huge.

That's a tough cup tie.

At least if we play a strong side but starts Bergvall, Spence, Gray or Richarlison and keep the rest the same, if we get done, it'll be on the players.
But more than that, Ange needs and wants a trophy cos he knows if he delivers, he's a hero and got serious leverage on a new contract extension. Just can't see him taking chances...

Gotta rotate the squad. Not asking for the kids, but I would like to see the like of Dragusin, Richy, Sarr, Bergvall, Spence, Gray, Timo, Davies starting

Should elaborate on what I mean with "go with the kids." Point is, Moore, Lankshear, and a couple others have to get playing time, or there's no point in keeping them around. But yeah, not throwing them out there for the sake of it like 'Arry would do in the EL. Really should have enough depth to put a good squad out that can not only win the game, but will be old enough to buy a beer after.
