How the fark are we 5th? After 25 matches we have recorded the lowest number of points since 2019! Last season we had 57 points, 20 more than now and we were in 3rd place after 25 games played, how in the name of Santa's hairy nutsack can we drop 20 points and just two places in the table?

It's jolly queer, everbody except Liverpool is more worser than usual. Looking at the top 6 places and the points achieved after 25 matches played we see:

I can't be arsed thinking up a statistical theory, it's Sunday morning and our visitors from England have left their fecking lurgy with us. What is your theory? I will use the Anne Elk Theory on Brontosauruses to explain this madness. Maybe every team except the Dippers have got worse and we are a little bit less pony than the others.

One more table to help you come up with your own theory about how our team (and a Brontosaurus) is "thin at one end, much, much thicker in the middle, and then thin again at the far end.". The number of points that each team in 5th place had bagged in the Premier League after 25 matches::

It's great that somehow we are still in the race for 4th, but how the actual fuck is it possible when 37 points is the lowest ever number of points for a team to be clinging onto 5th place?

Huge amounts of dirty TV rights money!!
Bar liverpool, the gap between top and bottom has narrowed,I think it is more because the bottom 12 sides have stopped being cannon fodder,There is more talent that stays at or goes to a norwich, bournemouth, brighton etc than before. With so much TV money for all PL clubs, you dont have to sell Pukki,or grealish,or Ake,saha, richarlson, traore, even mid table clubs like arsenal dont have to sell auboomerang.Add to that filthy rich arab, russian, chinese, american, porn baron owners at some clubs all waving their peckers at each others wealth,no one really wants to sell unless its ridiculous money for an overrated flash in the pan (stones, maguire).
Basically i dont have a stats sausage machine, but feel the bottom has got closer to the top in the league, and all except one club have had points squeezed out of them in the process..

I will have a look at the bottom, undercarriage, nether regions and see what the numbers are, you are probably right, but the big differences in this season compared to recent seasons will need someone like Anne Elk to explain.

A new theory has been proven! I shall call it the Dorset Inspired by some bloke in Greece theory. OK @skiathospurs can have the credit, The arse end of the PL has become much stronger this year. Behold the graph showing the % points change in all 20 positions after 25 matches from the previous season. It is upside down because I hate Excel and that is how it came out.
PCPointsDiff.png

That's probably a good thing if it keeps going, it will make the PL much more competitive - as long as the fecking Dippers crash and burn.

* Edit: I changed the graph, the bars were right but the axis at the bottom was showing silly numbers.

Liverpools is a fluke season, seems like every break,VAR goes for them.Good side, but not that far ahead as the points suggest.

What may reveal itself in support of a poorer league is how english clubs fare in europe,I know its not a good barometer, but with all the money, all the transfers coming in from other leagues,it should be back to golden times for english teams.Yes the spanish, italian leagues tilt fixtures.to aid their clubs and the broadcasters do all they can to fuck up PL teams,But on one hand 38 tough fixtures in england, real, barca probably have a dozen, italian clubs less and bayern only have to turn up in 4 games, psg can basically play their ladies side rest everybody for europe and still be ligue une champions, surely our teams are more ready to deal with tough games?Or are we just more knackered?

I think Liverpool’s football this season is incredible. I hate their myopic fans, the media bias, the self entitled nature of the club generally and everything else around it, but their flamboyant risk/reward hung ho football style is genius to watch. Klopp reminds me of Mourinho first time round and the conclusion of all this is simply that the rest of the league needs to wake up and find a solution quickly. Klopp’s team is not old and can dominate for a few years yet.

The good thing about the peculiarities of the league this year is that teams like Southampton are now playing fast attacking football And posing a threat to the whole league, same goes for Wolves and occasionally Sheffield United and others. We missed the boat during the first half of this season with essentially a knackered tired team and too many injuries, City (Pep?) look like they have also (temporarily?) lost their mojo, we’ll see. But as mentioned above money is gradually narrowing the playing field and will ultimately mean that academies, scouting and recruitment will become important. Of course the rich clubs with wealthy owners will likely always be able to buy success (City & Chelsea) but it might be more difficult.

The elephant in the room? The one big fear? at least for me is the potential European Super League. Managers already moan about too many games and lack of winter breaks, Chairmen don’t want Watford, Brighton and Bournemouth nicking parts of their financial TV pie, and when that happens and we have some sort of NFL style European football leagues I’ll stop going. I want the local aggro and bragging rights of playing the pikey’s on a Friday night, I want to go to historical grounds like Craven Cottage and I like the fact that the league is close and we can marvel at Norwich beating City and Bournemouth beating Chelsea. Long may it continue and that we eventually finish 4th, winning the FA Cup and Champions league along the way and relegate Chelsea to 5th......

Player in Training.
Liverpool are a class apart at the momnt, riding a wave of confidence. But look at City, the wave breaks sooner or later for no obvious reason.
Scousers apart, the rest of the division is so even it makes for great watching. Just wish we could push on instead of playing like shit until we fall behind.

Ok,you are a big stat fan,so I will throw this argument in to this thread.Just read an excellent article on the disparity in football, which is where we touched on here, how the PL has tightened up,well this article suggests otherwise and I guess bar leicester again the league table backs up the independant`s article.
Anyway, lots of silly little stats, info and percentages to gnaw on.Here is the link,it is a long read,I will cherry pick some bits to tease.

“We don’t want too many Leicester Citys.”

These were the words spoken by a senior figure from the Premier League’s ‘big six’ clubs, in the kind of high-end London hotel you can easily imagine.

“Football history suggests fans like big teams winning,” the official continued, to the group of business people and media figures present. “A certain amount of unpredictability is good, but a more democratic league would be bad for business.”

Edit;the next quote below was much further on in the article,I am no trying to attribute the quotes above to Levy, this quote is taken from a meeting between PL clubs to do with TV rights money sharing.

Their representatives were at a meeting to discuss the competition’s international TV rights distribution and, in putting forward the position of the big six, Daniel Levy just kept using the same five words: “We only want what’s fair.” As Joshua Robinson and Jonathan Clegg’s book The Club details, the Tottenham Hotspur chairman repeated it to every single objection.
The argument was that the ‘big six’ are the clubs who bring all the international attention – and so they therefore deserve more of the money. The counter-argument is obviously that they need teams to play against, and that the attractive founding principle of the Premier League is equality.

That big-six representative need not have worried. The entire sport has been increasingly conditioned so that Leicester City situations – where a club from outside the financial super elite actually wins a major title – are close to impossible. This is why the odds in 2015-16 were so long and that story was so exceptional. Let no one tell you, as former Real Madrid president Ramon Calderon insisted to The Independent, that “football has always been like this”.
He’s wrong. It hasn’t.
Every metric indicates that it is at a far worse level than ever before. It is getting worse and threatening to become irretrievable.

The last decade alone, which represents the true rise of the super-clubs alongside the huge rise in money, has seen:

  • a second Spanish treble
  • a first German treble
  • a first Italian treble
  • a first English domestic treble
  • three French domestic trebles in four years
  • a first Champions League three-in-a-row in 42 years
  • the first ever 100-point season in Spain, Italy and England
  • ‘Invincible’ seasons in Italy, Portugal, Scotland and seven other European leagues
  • 13 of Europe’s 54 leagues currently seeing their longest run of titles by a single club or longest period of domination.

Many of these feats appeared to be impossible for decades. They have now all taken place around the same time in the last decade, with the prospect of more to come. Needless to say, they have all been achieved by the wealthiest clubs in those competitions.

“I had the money to buy players,” Cortese says (ex saints chairman). “But not the money to keep players.”
More money, however, has simply led to more disparity Returning to wages, the ‘stretch’ from the bottom to the top in the Premier League has gone from 2.85x in that breakaway season of 1992-93 to 4.7x last year. In Spain, it has been as high as 17.2x, and in some mid-size leagues like Switzerland over 20x.
This has been the primary issue for most Premier League clubs seeking to grow, despite the influx of TV money that has allowed high transfer fees.
By the competition’s latest figures, the big six paid 51.3% of the total wages.

The ‘Everton problem’

The Champions League does much more, however, than creating this huge financial capital. It also creates a football capital – and what you might call the ‘Everton problem’.

It is just another way the game is so conditioned towards the richest. The massively free player market makes it a race to the top, where the richest are able to accumulate the best in a way never seen before. Every player obviously wants to be in such a competition. This means that even if clubs like Everton have the money to pay competitive wages, they are still mostly getting cast-offs, a level of player short of the true elite. And when they do have a player who can perform at Champions League level, like Romelu Lukaku, he is quickly picked off.

The forces of the game just don’t allow clubs outside the elite the time and space to get to that level. There are too many ceilings to smash through, with so many layers of money on top. The excellent Swiss Ramble Twitter account has calculated that England’s big six have benefited from 93% of European TV money in the last eight years.

etc etc, very interesting, and hard to disagree about the premise of what has been happening for decades now.Cant help but feel there is no going back to"sporting equality" as such, not so much a game of chance,a game of fixed odds.Oh fuck did say odds?that BF twat will show up and claim them as fact.....

I reckon ENIC are lining up a £3bn takeover, we still have no word on a Stadium sponsor, sleeve sponsor and Levy is signing up multi franchise deals like his life depended on it. I can't remember how much they paid for the club but whatever t was the profit is going to be enormous. Guess they got lucky in the end with Poch and his squad for 5 years, which helped finance the stadium.

Think it was £21m to buy Sugar out and then just under £30m a couple of years later to buy every share (remaining under some controlling share reg they invoked).Around £50m is the figure touted.

I am not an arch Levy hater, but where his fan boys rightly say "oh he hasnt taken any money out of the club",well not hard cash in dividends as such, but his last reported wages were £6m PA,19 years at lets say half of that,he has taken more in wages than the £50m paid by ENIC (think its 23% he has in ENIC??I am just too lazy to google but trust my memory). But the crafty financier has built a supermarket, college, offices in lilywhite house, sold an old plot of land and extensively redeveloped a new training facility, now incorporating a "lodge", posh word for small hotel, built a stadium planned to cost £450,and cost £1bn,partially due to extreme add-ons like a basement, retractable pitch, redesigned east stand nfl entrance,,biggest club shop in europe,a huge podium over the basement, groundworks for 2 hotels,a fucking bridge from his office to the stadium (insert the vadar march theme whilst you imagine it (dada daa dada da dada),he wants to pay millions to erase the name white hart lane by paying to rename the underground station. But he hasnt taken any money out.(besides £60m in wages).......yet,
But in 19 years the club has paid for (with revenue earned by THFC,(the team on the pitch and support),or the £650m mortgaged against the stadium and future revenue (yes your season ticket renewals are actually mortgaged against, true story),all those things aforementioned bought and built turning his £50m into a reported bids of no less than £2bn.Boy are those fanboys going to be salty fucks when he cashes out sorry, not sorry, but he will. LOOK AT HIS BUSINESS NAME,do any of you know what ENIC stands for??English National INVESTMENT Company.

If I was going to rant,I would talk about he and several other THFC directors (including the one who ingeniously uses a similar monika to his real name to leak ITK) sounds like the penguin from batmans real name (cobblepot),who have formed companies based in the bahamas, hmmmm bahamas who lives there?and own property in the high rd,worcs ave and by WHL station. An investment, riding on another development in the area, akin to insider trading but with property.

Highest ST prices,7th highest wages, and use the money between to buy more stuff to add to the portfolio, and just pray Harry can carry us for longer so we dont need to invest in a striker and the gravy train ends.

So are he and his cronies financial genius's, that have benefitted the people of Tottenham and the fans with world class football and a stadium to match and thus have earned their rewards, or cold hearted venture capitalists dressed up as Spurs fans wanting to leave a legacy? somewhere inbetween probably, although I'm pretty sure they couldn't have expected it to go as well as it has for them. The rich get richer eh?

Anyone think we can catch Leicester in 12 games and finish third? They are our last home fixture this season, which could be interesting. We are 10 points + goal difference behind them at present. Anyone remember that final game of the season at Wembley 2 years ago? 5-4 in the sunshine with a Lamela hat trick.........!!!!

Were gonna need to keep rolling the dice in the summer and for a good few TX windows until we have a crop of players who can compete at the sharp end again......

Or.....

Were gonna have to pay the going rate for established Prem/CL players who can come in and perform at the required level.

One way or another Levy needs to pony up.....

Anyone else see that pig?????

There was a long interesting article on RB Leipzig on the BBC Sport website yesterday and probably on the internet as well. It talked about the meteoric rise of the club in the space of 10 years from a German regional league to challenging at the top of the Bundesliga. Money of course was a huge factor via the Red Bull sponsorship (an interesting side tale in the article) but I was interested to read about their business model of sourcing and scouting players from smaler cllubs including another of their investments RB Salzburg in Austria. It seems they won't pay more than about £20m for a player and simply coach them to be successful. The two key figures in this are..........Paul Mitchell ex saaints and us and Gerard Houllier - remember him? Dortmund seem to do a similar thing - Jadon Sancho and Haarland two prime examples and who knew that Klopp was going to turn Robertson and Trent Alexander into world beaters and be the making of Salah. is this a German thing? or just a new approach to finding, buying and coaching new talent rather than buying it, which seems to have been the way in the Premier League for most years prior.

I feel like Poch was a believer in the 'German' method above, Mourinho probably not so much, judging by his recent comments on Parrott. Erling Haarland is also 19, Norwegian and born in Leeds, scored a couple last night for Dortmund.

Financially doped, its not a fairytale, they avoided certain ownership rules (the 50+1),its in the name, from what I see german clubs hate them for doing a chelsea, psg, city, not their success but their english model of treating supporters.

I guess we all got so pissed off with the premier league decade of arsenal or united, who lets face it were just outspending the same as city and chelsea did later. Not quite as obscene but it was still the rich get richer, the more you earn the more you spend, then you earn more so you can sign more. The amounts were still as out of reach for 90 other clubs as now, same in the 60s,we signed the cream because we were top of the pile earning. But shouldnt mean it never changes, rise and fall should and always was cyclical.
I think with Leipzig, its the ownership that has pissed other teams off, club named after a sponsor, club not majority owned by the fans, dont forget FFP is just to keep the same greedy pigs at the top table, protecting their revenue which allows them to spend more. But it doesnt cover other expenditure, you can spend what you like on a stadium, facilities and FFP doesnt care, but if your oil baron, sheik, nation state or drinks company give any amount to build a stadium to then help you jump the revenue gap, doesnt matter as long as its not wages or transfers.

Even english clubs havent stooped so slow as to be called vitality bournemouth fc or bet365 united of wherever,(although didnt york have a ground named kitkat crescent).Imagine we get a huge amount to spend on the team if we are happy to be called google tottenham, though I guess danny rose would like that.

Who knew............. ;) and I'm guessing the revenue thus generated from say 40,000 season tickets and matchday f&b you could mortgage against and buy more including affording higher wages for players etc, which gets a greater level of sponsorship etc. etc.

exactly that !!,but is a tad more organic and not as immediate as just treating your club with gifts of 100s of millions worth of strikers, which would be nice!!.Football even back in the 1920`s when arsenal were promoted at our expense is a sort of old boys network, all protecting their interests, fifa, uefa, the fa,pl its all about looking after the "club and who` s in it"..Nothing to do with protecting a sport or integrity, its really a race to the bottom, not a game of chance, more a game of the fixed house rules in a casino.
