Will always remember his amazing partnership with Crouchy,

Indeed a Tottenham legend and one of the best strikers we have ever had.

Some brilliant goals, some tough personal stuff and a big heart, especially with the tragic young lad, Bradley at Sunderland. I hope he has a long fulfilling and rewarding retirement.

An absolute legend and someone we could have, and should have, re-signed as a backup striker when he was available a few years ago. He'd have still been able to do the business I think.

A well deserved retirement.

I always remember the story of Defoe stopping to play football on the street with a young Harry Kane. Top bloke who obviously loved the game on and off the pitch.

Absolute legend! Enjoy retirement at 39.. Actually fuck you 39 ya light weight!

Great career and a really decent pro. I remember having a nightmare journey in the rain to watch a game once, all the way up from the south coast with delays and I was soaking wet, cold and miserable.

I considered turning around at seven sisters and going home, but decided to carry on and watch the match. Defoe and Spurs destroyed Wigan 9-1. Had a much better journey home

Oooh you barstid! That has brought back traumatic, unhappy memories for me. It was my birthday and Mrs D had bought us tickets to ............ England vs Samoa at Twickenham, the crappiest game of rugby I have ever seen. Also she got seats right up in the sky and I can't do high stuff, I went really iffy, had an attack of the vapours, and swooned like a Victorian lady in a too tight corset, luckily the nice Twickers staff got us seats suitable for humans not fucking seagulls. The game was crap but the match she was going to get me surprise tickets for was the 9-1 game.
