“It’s not about individuals at centre-half, it’s about partnerships,” said Sherwood. “I hope van de Ven is the answer.

“To me, he looks a bit wooden. He is very quick. 6ft5. I am just saying what I see. I don’t know a lot about him and, hopefully, he is a lot better than I think.

“He is very wooden on the ball. Slow on the turn. Very quick in a straight line. And, hopefully, Romero and him could be the partnership that they need.”

Micky van de Van has been reflecting on his Premier League debut for Tottenham and revealed he has taken inspiration from ex-Spurs defender Jan Vertonghen.

Ange Postecoglou's new side drew 2-2 with Brentford in their season-opener, with Van de Ven — a £43million summer arrival from Wolfsburg signing — lining up in central defence alongside Cristian Romero.

On making his Tottenham bow, Van de Ven said: "Incredible, really excited. We didn't get the win, that's the only negative thing about today, but we go forward now to next week.

'Everything is harder, it's going quicker and it's going up and down, up and down. There is no moment in the game where you feel you can rest a bit; you always have to be sharp and 100 per cent focused."

The Dutch defender admitted he had studied Vertonghen during his time in the Eredivisie with Ajax and then across eight years in north London.

He said: "I was always in the stadium when Jan Vertonghen was playing for Ajax. I always said he was a good left-footed centre-back. I watched videos of him, so of course I learned from him.

"I watched Spurs a lot of times because a lot of players from Ajax also went to Spurs and also players from Holland. Always when you see a player go to Spurs it is an amazing step if you went from Ajax, AZ, PSV. Of course they didn't win a prize for a long time but you never know what is going to happen.

"I love the club, I love the players and I think there is so much potential under this trainer (Postecoglou)."

Another thing he has in common with Vertonghen. Tactics Tim doesn't rate him.

Well he is being touched by the divine in that photo. So maybe it is a miracle.

It could have been severe cramp? That’s a thing, right?

Apparently the picture is real as he’s been confirmed as being at Hotspur way today.

Sort of related, but if it's just a few games that VDV is out, I would be happy playing PEH at CB. I think he'd be absolutely fine for a few games. Plenty of midfield cover so, any easy fix if he's up for it.

I hope it doesn't require surgery.

Very unlucky for both club and player. Maybe the best defender in the league this season.

A lot of the reports said that the club are optimistic that they can avoid surgery but that they still expect him to be out for some time. I suppose it'll come down to what the actual injury is in the end.

I have no idea what kind of back line we're going to have against Wolves.

Apparently his hamstring is said to be Grade 2/“borderline Grade 3”.

Grade 2 is 3 weeks out, Grade 3 is 6 to 8 so maybe somewhere in between ?

Take an early January comeback all day long...!

Maybe with the kid Philips, Romero not being a dick and anyone we stump up for in Jan we can eek through defensively...?

I’m thinking we should be giving Philips a chance as well. He’s more mobile than Dier and I think he’d be better suited to what Ange wants.

Maybe early-mid December.

I don't know what the solution is but Ange will find out a lot about his squad if he plays the youth for sure.

Apparently he was at some kind of darts event tonight and was telling people he'll be back in training "within two weeks".
