Hard to imagine football without him. I never got to see him play, but due to his brief time with New York Cosmos, he was synonymous with the game over here when I was a kid and really until the 2000s.

Like most kids my age back then, I first became aware of him in Escape to Victory. One of those people who truly transcended the sport and was one of those players who literally everyone knew, regardless of whether or not you were in to football.

Legend.

So many iconic figures are passing.

Besides his immense talent, Pele possessed something that many of today's footballers lack: humility.

He transcended the sport & was probably the most recognizable sports figure that ever lived.

As a kid, I was fortunate to have seen him play in person when the Cosmos played the Whitecaps. A fond memory.
