Teddy Sheringham has revealed how close Tottenham came to signing Diego Maradona.

The Spurs icon told a brilliant story on League of Legends from his time at White Hart Lane.

Former England and Manchester United striker Sheringham went into detail about some of the club’s transfer activity – recalling the fascinating events which almost landed the Argentina legend.

The 50-year-old recalls a conversation he had with then Spurs manager Osvaldo Ardiles about bringing the World Cup hero to London.

But he also reveals how the deal eventually broke down, resulting in Spurs moving to sign Jurgen Klinsmann instead.

Sheringham said: “He (the manager) came to me one day and for my opinion, he said to me ‘I’m thinking about signing someone. It’s Diego Maradona’.

“I told him ‘do it, just do it. I’d love to play with him.'”

Sheringham goes on to explain that Ardiles decided to pull the plug on signing Maradona because he feared the controversial Argentine star would bring “too much baggage” along with him.

And Sheringham admits he was just as happy with the signing of Klinsmann.

Watching Maradona play for spurs in Ardiles` testamonial was a treat,in the flesh what a skillful player.Bit of a loose cannon shall we say though.;) No doubt we would have become hated by all of england if we signed him,he`s not very popular there you know!!

We also nearly signed Mario Kempes argentine world cup winning striker,he played some friendlies trying to earn a contract, but we didnt take him on.
