Kane is one of ten captains at the World Cup who plan to wear rainbow armbands with Wales, Germany, France, Holland, Belgium, Denmark and Switzerland among the countries supporting the move.

Yeah, them Qataris will soon think twice about banging up gay people for up to 7 years eh? When they're confronted with HK in his rainbow armband they will soon all be wearing pink towels on their heads when they go to view a nice stoning or other traditional form of entertainment.

article 258 of Qatar’s legal code condemns any man who “copulates with a male,” imposing a term of seven years in prison. Article 296 condemns to prison anyone who is engaged in “leading, instigating or seducing a male in any way to commit sodomy.”

No, it is absolutely nothing, useless gesture politics. Refusing to go to Qatar would be something.

I have to say I agree...

Just saying I don't do politics, or it's not up to me, or there's nothing I can do is a fucking cop out...

Imagine if Kane, Ronaldo, Messi all said "fuck you Quatar... drag your middle ages attitudes out of your arses and deal with serious real world modern views in an open way and we might play football in your country".

But then I'm not a professional footballer with billions in endorsements that are probably propped up by these corrupt and backwards regimes...

The problem is that broadcasters won't even bring it up. FOX, who are broadcasting the WC over here, have already said they won't discuss the issues surrounding the event. No surprise, since their coverage of Russia 2018 was essentially a month-long hand job. AFAIK, it was the same throughout the English-speaking world.

The announcers even called the Pussy Riot protestors who ran on the field in the final "idiots," not even mentioning the idea that lots of people in that country were none too pleased with Putin, and were willing to risk prison and torture to make their point. They even toured Stalin's dacha, FFS. If there was any hope that the armband or Denmark's kits or whatever would spark meaningful conversation, that would be one thing, but as is, they're basically empty.

The players are complicit (virtue-signalling armband or no),the journos are complicit, and yes, we are too.

But...I don't think I'm shifting blame to assuage my conscience by saying that the broadcasters, and their paymasters the sponsors, are the most despicable of a pretty base lot. There's really no way to plumb the depths to which they'd sink.

Up here (over here?) in Canada, weMve recently had a scandal blow up the national governing body for hockey, (which is actually a big deal here). Teenage hotshots engaging in gangbangs, who'da thunk it? Anyway, the victims were shushed, the perpetrators were cushioned, and the board of directors closed ranks. They were only defenestrated once the corporate sponsors put their wallets away.

Which is a roundabout way of setting up the link to this tory:

It's a satirical article, and like all the best satire, it's almost true, and it pleases me and makes me sad and angry at the same time.

This whole world Cup is a disgrace as soon as Qatar was chosen, it could not be a more obvious bribe. I'm not interested.

So if I watch the world cup matches I am complicit in condoning the actions of the Qatari government and FIFA, and if I refuse to watch I will be virtue-signalling. I'm screwed.
