The Offside rule

I think most of you know my son is a ref ( today we were at Fulham u16’s v Orient ) saw Scott Parker he really is a shorty .
Anyway we disagree most of the time in He offside rule , I go to the Brian Clough rule of thumb , If You’re on the pitch and beyond the last player you are offside and interfering ( if they’re down injured , and outside the box) providing they don’t get and score like some guy did in another forum Skiathos put up .
Today , Wolves 4th goal was awful , the scorer was 3 yards beyond the defenders , but because the ball got played out wide , when he received the ball back he was deemed NOT OFFSIDE .
However , how many times has a player been beyond the last defender , when the ball is played and run back 8 yards to head the ball, and get flagged offside .......somewhere is the advantage , there isn’t one
Bring back the old rules bas3d in logic

With the pace of play nowadays, it's a mug's game trying to get offside decisions right. I'm amazed they get them right as often as they do. And VAR sometimes muddies the water too, especially since the linos are told to keep their flags down on tight decisions.

Unless you've played the game you won't be able to interpret this situations correctly imo.

That's where this falls down, refs ain't players.

My answer to simplifying the rule is for starters in the penalty area you are offside whatever phase of play as it was in the old ruling. If you are in an offside position in the area you have to be interfering with play surely thats why you are there to take advantage, affecting defenders, line of sight of the keeper and his position. It is a clearly marked area of the pitch to help officials rule. Also with VAR,they should simplyfy it and just use the position of feet when determining if its off or on,its just more accurate than when trying to workout if someone leaning and their chest or head is offside technically, because your arms cant be offside as the rule is only parts of the body that can legally score a goal.

The fact VAR is going to be used and argued about over decisions of inches with offside,if you have stolen an inch on the defence is that a clear and obvious error or trying to steal an advantage?Offside was brought in originally to stop goal hanging,it made defending a legitimate tactic.I dont want to go back to the 80s of everyone standing with their arm up appealing, but people stealing an advantage and its deemed 1st phase, and then tapping in from 2yds when its 2nd phase is also wrong,or is it just a law we have to now get used to?

Yeah , they do the older age groups there , where the 1st team train. It’s ok , but not a patch on Chelsea’s ground. If only we lived nearer to Spurs ground. Last year he did a Fulham v Spurs , but only on the line .

Yeh it's pretty dated, the gated slip road opposite leads to another sports ground and used to be owned by the BBC. Fulham bought that a few years ago for training facilities so I suspect something new will be along in time.

Offside is frigging wild now. I remember a while back, I think it was Mata, stole a yard but was offside cause of his knee. It was in the air as he was starting to stride.

that was sort of the area I meant, its so vague.Ok bring VAR in if you must but some laws need amending to accomodate it,if we are arguing over was his knee was offside?what is the point of VAR?

The moral of any story is there is no point in VAR, but you are right. As it us with us things need to be simplified to reduce the time it takes to make a decision.

So last night I’ve rarely seen a more inept Lino performance in the West Ham v Liverpool game .
The OS has about the most room around the outside of the pitch , and yet the Lino for the Dippers goal , was 4 yards beyond the last defender ( trying to get out of Llalanas way) and therefore Coukdnt see Milner 2 yards beyond that defender . It is inexcusable .
Then to compound it, with the last kick Origi was a yard offside , but again the other Lino kept his flag down . The officials seeem to be doing their best to help out LFC , I mean they’ve had 5 penalties since Xmas day ( I think we’ve been denied more than that , v LFC , v. Burnley , 2 v Wolves , I’m sure there’s another one , too

Still think Spurs have one of the most daft non offsides ever given... That goal where Vertonghen got a forward pass from Paulinho when both were still in the Spurs half... vs Sunderland iirc?
