'Bottom line for me is that yes, I totally agree with you that we should be proud of the boys, they’ve been tremendous and that we dominated a team with an incredible European pedigree but I just can’t help feeling we’ve let another chance to grow as a team slip thru our fingers.'

Both those things are true. We will be even better next year.

Still absolutely gutted. Struggling with the abuse in the office today.

I know we are still learning and a work in progress and it is essentially another step in the right direction - but fuck did this one hurt. Someone mentioned the Madrid game a few years back. That one hurt too but this hurts more... because we actually played them off the park and deserved to go through both on our performance and on paper. Better team, better style, more intent, worked our fucking nuts off, etc etc. Just 3 bloody painful minutes.

Although I am still completely gutted, I'm okay - as long as it doesn't derail us in the league. Before the season started I said I just wanted to not be embarrassed in the champs league and to finish 4th. Well the first part is done tenfold so now here's hoping we can finish strong and grab top 4 as after all it's all very well learning from this champs league exit but if you aren't in the competition next season how can you put what you've learnt into practice and do one better?

Next match can't come soon enough for me. I want a huge performance to show every fucker out there mugging us off that we won't implode and we aren't the same team we were in previous seasons. I believe (and hope) we can show that we have the strength and character to channel the defeat into positives and bounce back stronger than ever - starting with Bournemouth on Sunday.

COYS!

If anyone is getting any abuse, just tell them to fuck off, unless of course they've recently beaten Juventus in the Champions League, then fair enough.

Devastated. Most painful second half since Utd hit 5 at the Lane, and that was just a league match.

I thought we were bossing them, but they did what successful teams do. They took their chances.

We are simply not clinical enough.

This is what Allegri said before the match.

I don’t know how Spurs are going to play. We’ll have to be a lot better technically than in the first game, particularly the second half. For us it’s like a final," said the respected coach, who was in charge of AC Milan when we knocked them out of the Champions League at this stage in 2011.

“We have to put in a performance and get a result, otherwise we’ll be going out. We have to be very positive. That’s the approach we need to take. They like to keep possession, keep the ball moving and we need to disrupt that.”

With the tie finely poised at 2-2 after the first leg, away goals will come into play if the scores are level at the end of the 90 minutes.

"This is such a huge game and you want to play in a game like that, even if you’re not in tip-top condition," said Allegri, whose squad has suffered with injuries of late.

“These games at the highest level are all about taking your chances. We had a tough game against Lazio on Saturday. (Paulo) Dybala took the chance at the end.

“I don’t see any reason why (Gonzalo) Higuaín and Dybala can’t both play. Higuaín has been training with the team for the last few days. Dybala has recovered well from Lazio and he’s a young man, 24.

“There’ll be more space (tonight),more room and more chances. The important thing is to be very careful in defence.”

I'm letting this go now, got to move on.

Yes! We do have ourselves to blame, the best teams are clinical and if there’s one criticism i’d throw at the boys, is that they’re quite wasteful in front of goal at times, it’s my opinion, people can say it was a brilliant performance over the 2 legs, which it was and of course i’m proud of the boys, that goes without saying but i’m thinking of the future, if this team is gonna stick together, then we have to start winning games like last night, the longer we go tripping up in games that we should be winning, then the longer our search for silverware will go on and the harder it will be to keep hold of our talent.

They were there for the taking last night, we can talk about their thuggery but that didn’t have anything remotely to do with the fact that we could’ve closed the door on them by half time. I’m not saying that we would’ve gone onto win the cup but getting thru last night, would’ve done wonders for their confidence as a team, being able to call upon that experience would’ve been massive. I wouldn’t have minded so much if they were clearly the better team but they weren’t, I know it’s negative and that we need to be positive right now but I find it hard, when we had a grt chance to make another giant step in this team evolving into something amazing. Of course IF this team can stay together then the potential is enormous and I have no doubt that many of these hurdles will be skipped over but for now, i’m just aware that the clock is ticking.

I appreciate that players make mistakes and that we’re a young side, with lots of potential to improve but whilst the latter is true to a degree, there’s also a vast amount of experience at club and international level, within the squad.

Bottom line for me is that yes, I totally agree with you that we should be proud of the boys, they’ve been tremendous and that we dominated a team with an incredible European pedigree but I just can’t help feeling we’ve let another chance to grow as a team slip thru our fingers.

I shall await the onslaught!!
Coulda, shoulda, woulda, but, but, but, but, but - didn't. Too many 'buts' in that post for me,

There is no blame to be doshed out - or do you agree with the 'bottled' it' and 'Spursy' tag? All this we're not clinical, or we don't finish and wasteful stuff is just bollocks. It it were true then we wouldn't be 4 points off 2nd in the Premier League, in the quarter finals of the FA Cup, have even been in with a sniff against Juventus in the 2nd leg and achieved our best ever Premier League season ever last year. Yes, the clock is ticking, with every tick we get better. We have only been in the Champions League twice and that ticking clock will give us the experience we need. To expect to win it 2nd time round was optimistic, we coulda of course. Blame means that someone did something wrong, that didn't happen last night or in the previous leg. Maybe we should blame ourselves for having expectations? Nah, fuck that I expect to win every game, but when it goes tits up I don't blame anyone (since the dark days of AVB and Tim) when the team give 100% and they did.

We have never had it so good is a dumb phrase but it is true (in the modern Premier League era).

The stats of last night's game tell a different, familiar story (see our last two games against the Chavs).

Sure we're still learning and maturing as a squad. Fergie's Utd endured some hard lessons in the CL before winning it. I'm not disputing how far we've come, but you're deluded if you think we're ruthless enough in front of goal, in crucial games against the elite clubs. Last night proves that.

I'm as delighted as any Yiddo at our progress, but that doesn't mean we're suddenly immune to valid criticism. The players have often been the first to admit that they need to be more clinical. It's difference between winning trophies and finishing second. I firmly believe we'll get there though. Providing we keep this squad together, and strengthen.

Ooh stats! Excellent. I love stats! But let's not just pick one game, especially not a cup game against the 5th highest EUFA ranked side in Europe - we are 19th. Were we 'clinical' against Real Madrid, the number one side in Europe? Bet your bollocks we were. Were we clinical against Dortmund, 9th ranked? Yep. So how are we not ruthless against the elite clubs?

Are we clinical in the League?
  • In the 21 Premier League seasons prior to last season we had averaged 41 goals after 29 games, the lowest ever was in 1998 when we got just 26 - not clinical.
  • Last year we got 57, our highest ever - clinical.
  • This season we have scored 55, just 2 short of the record - clinical.
  • We have scored the 4th highest number of goals in the Premier League this season, 2 short of United - reasonably clinical, City are a freak side and Liverpool must be on drugs.
Last night proved nothing, it was one game, a cup game and that sort of thing happens in cup games. Maybe it proved that I am a misanthropic, OCD type geezer, but everyone already knew that.

What I really can't get over is how my wife couldn't understand why I was so upset and in such a bad mood yesterday. Has the woman been living under a rock for 20 years? WTF?

My wife knows why I'm on a massive downer. She says it's 'just a game' and to 'move on'. Her lack of understanding is matched only by her cruel wisdom and insensitivity.

She said the same thing to me! IT'S NOT A FUCKING GAME! They don't pay them millions to play a game. They pay them millions because crazy people will devote their lives to following them. Drives me nuts.

I stayed out of work and took my youngest son out of school early (my oldest couldn’t leave early). When my older boy got home it was 1-nil, so a massive fight broke out between them bc my youngest blames him for jinxing it by simply coming home. They’re both in tears about the result, and I’m telling my youngest that there’s no such thing as jinxes, they’re just taking their pain out on each other.

In the meantime I, as a pretty educated, rational man, was thinking—fuck, we’ve lost the last three games I’ve missed work to watch, haven’t we? .

Hahaha! i am superstitious as fook when it comes to sports. Of course it makes no sens, but we all believe we have some impact on the outcome. Totally irrational. Or is it ...

Ha fucking ha. Sarcasm is fun, but sensible arguments are better, not stupid, that's not fun, I'm not hopeful.

Do me a favour, be polite and quote me when you are responding, or I might miss one your pearls of wisdom or a good bit of sarcasm, it don't work if I don't see it.

We have never had it so good is a dumb phrase but it is true (in the modern Premier League era).

Or...you could spin it the other way, that if we were more clinical in front of goal, we wouldn’t be 4 pts of 2nd, we’d be in 2nd, maybe 8-10 pts off City and in the quarters of the cl. Our conversion rate is 9th in the league, which suggests we are a little wasteful in front of goal, i’m sure there’ll be something in your stat machine to counter that!!

If this squad of players were guaranteed to stay for another 2-3 years, then I wouldn’t be concerned at all and i’d be all about towing the line of how proud I was of the boys (I doubt pride played a particularly big part in placating the boys last night, i’m sure to a man, they’re all thinking what a chance wasted) and what a performance against one of the European giants, however you’re assuming they’re all gonna stay for a while and they’re gonna hoover up all sorts of silverware together, who knows that might happen but history suggests otherwise, it says we sell our best players, although it sounds like we’ll be moving mountains to keep hold of this generation of players, unfortunately though money and a better chance of winning silverware is what motivates the majority of players and some of them, i’m sure, will get itchy feet at some point in the not too distant future.

With every cup we go out of from here on in, the pressure from outside of the club and to an extent within, will intensify. The fa cup now takes on an enormous amount of importance.

It’s all about opinions mate, I know where you’re coming from, hell, i’m sure the majority of the fan base share your views, I just look at it slightly differently that’s all.

I will say this: I do feel we need a proper captain. Someone on the field who can settle the boys down or fire 'em up when things go against us. Could have used that last night. Nothing against Hugo, but he's a keeper. Kinda hard to call the striker a worthless cunt from that far away. Wonder if anyone else feels that way.

Right ready.... but it hasn't changed much from last night tbh.

So what a game... what a performance... what a fucking ultimate gutter...

If I start by being critical it was that we didn't adapt to their changes... or we didn't adapt quickly enough.

Their dizzy 10 mins around the hour mark following their changes won them the game and our lack of reaction to those changes lost us it.

Other than that I think it was pretty much an awesome performance with nothing much else to be critical about from us. Yes Harry was quiet but he was marshalled by a decent CB who played a blinder for an old cunt... I fucking hate him btw the arrogant prick... did you hear what he ungraciously said to the press after the game about us reverting to type? Basically calling us out for bottling it. Some would argue he is right... I'd argue he is a cunt.

They are clearly a top class outfit with a superbly balanced squad that has the ability and mentality to change fact to win a game they are not even in.

Once they'd got a nose in front they again changed to the standard Italian 2 banks of players with zero space between them to stifle and kill our game...

We will be down but by no means out... that game will stand us in great a stead for next season, for another exciting journey through Europe and Poch won't let us not learn from our obvious mistakes in both last night and the first leg. Let's remember if we hadn't gifted the those 2 home goals we'd have run away with this tie in the first leg and last night would have been a given.

Need a full reaction from this squad now to be strong and focused on winning everything we now can including the FA cup and pushing on up the league table.

We need to do what we're good at and dictate to teams how things are gonna be and do that for a full 90 mins or until we can guarantee the job is well and truly done. Maybe a little guilty of taking our foot off their throats around the hour mark last night and easing up too much.

Onwards and upwards and were blessed to be feeling aggrieved that we've been dumped out of the biggest and best competition in world football by a seasoned veteran and multiple winner and champion or that tournament. 90% of the teams in Europe would kill for that opportunity and it's us who had it, enjoyed it, pushed it seriously close and nearly did it.

100% pissed but look for the good, it's there.

@Yid It's incredible what an immense impact Allegri's system tweak had on the match. From my pov, gauging how the two legs had played out up until then, I can't see many Juve fans holding out much hope. We simply dominated them & they appeared to have absolutely no response. Physically, they were barely hanging on while their frustration grew at chasing shadows & committing foul after foul.

It boggles the mind what 12 mins over two legs can amount to. Elation for them winning those 12 mins & despair for us at what could have been for dominating the remaining 168.

Poch today pre bournemouth.

We're in a process of the club settling the basis to try to win, creating a culture of winning, it's not only about on the pitch and trying to score goals, performing in a good way. It's about the whole structure. You need to build a history of winning. For us, it's too early to judge us in this way because the process is a long one.

We're in a good way but when you compete at this level, in the Champions League, there's no higher level in football, and when you deserve to go through, when you create more chances and only we lack being clinical in front of goal or in some period of the game, in five minutes, we didn't compete in the way the competition demands. That is all about living this experience and improving as a team and of course like a club. When you compete against Juventus, it's 11v11 on the pitch but the history sometimes is a reason that puts success on one side or another.
