I was just lucky to be alive in the olden days and I've always loved live music.. Rolf was great, of course we didn't know about his 'hobbies' back then, but when he did his cover set with a great rock band it was funny as fuck and the music was good. I wish I could have added the Spice Girls to my list, I tried to persuade my grandson to go see them with no luck - if I had gone on my own I might have been labelled as a bit of a Rolf myself.

So, Rolf was NOT the red herring.

Small venues definitely make more of an impact. First band I saw was Motorhead at the Astoria (sadly no more) and they blew my brains out, to this day still the best gig I've ever been to.

Saw def leppard as a support band to UFO when it was just the wasted EP released,also saw phil collen in Girl before he left to join them.Saw Rose Tattoo support ac/dc,another decent aussie band.I could be the only one to see iron maiden original line up here?when they supported judas priest (who were suprisingly good not my usual cup of tea).
Did no one else see Queen?my aunt worked for their accountants and from 79 I always had access to freebie VIP tickets,such lauded venues as croydon fairfield halls,and the rainbow finsbury park.I would get a call "got 7 tickets for queen tonight do you and any friends want to go?" fucking right I did,probably the best frontman live i have seen,singer,musician and energetic nutter,axl rose probably comes 2nd,bon scott 3rd.

My favourite live band was probably Big Country,just for atmosphere and the cult following of every one knowing every word,they did some really special gigs.Worst I saw probably simple minds,jim kerr turning a gig into one long huge political rally,however worthy the cause i dont go for that shit.

I didn't go to the Roundhouse because honestly they were really bad, It took a couple of years before they were worth listening to. I'm name-dropping and pretending Lemmy was a mate, he was an acquaintance who me and my mates and 100 other people used to drink with back in the olden days. Lemmy came up and sung at a gig we were doing at the Marquee, in the 70's, we didn't ask him to and I don't think he knew he had done it. Larry Wallis was a bloke we all knew well from the Pink fairies who were big on the circuit back then, I was going to audition for the Fairies but was too wasted to get there! Probably lucky because I definitely wouldn't have survived full-time touring. I liked the dope too much and having a proper job kept me a bit grounded.

Lemmy was one of the scariest blokes I ever met, not physically, but you knew if you ended up with the crowd he was out with there was a good chance you were going to end up in hospital from alcohol poisoning or dodgy chemicals. How the fuck that bloke lived to 70 years old is a medical mystery. Happy days!

I met Dave Murray from Iron Maiden in a pub before a UFO reunion gig at Astoria and then Janick a few years later in a pub in Ealing but made a right cunt of myself and he went to the other side of the bar my mate who I was in a band with was right pissed off with me but I was too pissed to care!

I generally don't fare well when meeting 'famous' people although I met Sanjeev Baskar and Mira Siall in Casa Battlo in Barca last year and didn't completely disgrace myself, maybe I am maturing. MWAHAHAHA

Oooh I remembers them Budgie blokes, they were rocky with the occasional bit of a funky groove man! I might have seen them in the 70's I might not have, many days, weeks, months and years are a bit of a haze.

I just had a look at that Google thing and I probably definitely did see them live cos they played at the Greyhound in Croydon a few times, so I would have almost definitely have been there, I started going there when I was not quite 18, probably 14 actually, I lost many brain cells there it was a brilliant place - I think.

Looking at the site I have remembered a few more bands I saw live, Curved Air, I liked them, Groundhogs, but I probably listed them in my original list - saw them loads of times, they were pukka, Tony McPhee was one of my heroes. Manfred Mann's Earthband - Steve Waller was a mate who sadly died in 2000, he was only 48. I used to go the Father Red Cap in Camberwell and see his band on a Sunday lunchtime or join in the jam sessions at the Half Moon in Herne Hill - the gin done for him, he liked a bottle or three. An amazing musician and a great bloke, Sadly missed.

I'm going to list my top 5 live bands now, this thread has inspired me to actually pick up my guitar and play, just like yesterday, though I am not going to get down on my knees and pray.... I've been listening to some old school music as well - Bob Dylan stuff done by other folks, everybody did Bob better than Bob, he wrote some great tunes that were all begging to be covered,

Drum roll..........

5 - Bo Didley. Terrible guitarist, not a great singer, but the passion and almost violent playing blew my mind man.
4 - Hawkwind - I almost remember seeing them at the Finsbury Park Astoria, so much acid, so much naked Stacia, I've got a silver machine
3 - Rolling Stones - If my mum had let me go to the Hyde park gig I would have seen them live in 5 different decades
2 - Joe Bonamassa - The best guitarist I have ever seen.
1 - Pink Floyd - Yep, has to be numero uno, I saw them many times and every time I got all trembly as fuck, great show, NOT the Floyd without Waters.

I almost added Ted Nugent, he was funny as fuck, a total nutcase, but it was loud and great fun.

Yeah, I caught Big Country at the Corner Hotel in Melbourne late last year. Packed to the fucking rafters and everyone knew every word. Magical night, crowd of about 800 in a proper old-school pub venue.
