Which officially renders this competition a bit of a joke. Would be very difficult to be proud of winning the Pizza Cup.........?? this competition should really be for the Football League anyway.

What would you replace it with,premier league cup?It has repercussions all the way down the 92,revenue,exposure and not least a chance for some squad to be used.I would still keep it,imperfect as it really is.Also the league placings dont need another automatic european spot,they have already taken away a chance for losing finalists in order to keep the same half a dozen teams in europe one way or another.I include us this year in that category.

I wouldn't replace it with anything for the PL clubs. I'm a fan of the PL funding the the league tier system purely financially. Although I haven't really thought it through because it might end up one day with smaller football league clubs being owned by PL clubs as 'feeder' clubs and places for U23 players to gain experience.

Thinking the lower-tier clubs would prefer a day in the sun showing they can look PL players in the eye, along with the payday. Better than just the cash alone.

Fair enough, but with the current ridiculous schedules then people shouldn't complain about fielding 'squad' teams, which in turn devalues the competition?
Can anyone remember back to the 70's & 80's when there was the League, FA & League Cups and a European competition plus the Internationals, why no-one complained about the number of matches (on terrible pitches with heavier footballs)

Agree 100%. I love seeing squad teams, don't think it devalues the competition at all (except monetarily, which motivates this perennial debate).
But...that works better when we've got players around who haven't been loaned out. We've got a good-sized squad now, and there are plenty of first-team regulars who need game time (as discussed elsewhere),but I'd love to see more "kids" up against the Wycombe or Plymouth or whoever.

Back then european football was knockout,not an elongated seeded group of cash playing 6 games before the competition begins.
League cup is mostly an arse if you are in europe,if not and we didnt have it (league cup) teams would just have the fa cup and fighting relegation.

To win the EL this season, we'll have to play 21 games, I think? As opposed to 12 in '72 and '84. At least they've cut down on the League Cup games.
I personally enjoy these games--I like seeing players who aren't normally in the rotation, and I enjoy watching European teams I don't get to watch normally. But it's definitely difficult for PL teams, most of which are also sending lots of players away to these useless international friendlies that seem to be every three weeks now. It's hard for clubs (not so much managers, but club hierarchies) to complain too much about fixture congestion when, in a normal season, they've got players flying all around the US or Asia in August.

If it wasnt for covid,the qualifying would have been over 2 legs,and after tonight we would have played 8 games,thats 4 rounds in the old uefa cup ,thats about qtr finals in old money.

Our away fixture against Stoke City in the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup will take place on Wednesday 23 December. Kick-off at the bet365 Stadium will be at 5.30pm. The match will be shown live on Sky Sports.

We have drawn Brentford in the Caribou semi-finals and will host them at The Lane. Probably the most difficult matchup we could have been dealt, as we have already thrashed the other two seminfinalists. At least we won't have to travel! Glass half full.
