Twenty-one months since leaving Queens Park Rangers have featured a brief role as an adviser at Derby and a briefer spell in charge of Jordan's national team, but his views are strong and his enthusiasm infectious.

He has plenty to say as he sinks into the sofa with a cuppa, hits the usual sequence on his TV remote and sees Lorraine Kelly replaced by images of Gareth Southgate beamed in from St George's Park.

'England are bland, no flair,' said Redknapp. 'What is important is finding an identity. What is Gareth Southgate really about? How do his teams want to play? That's what I want to know.

'If someone asked me how England have played under four or five managers since Glenn Hoddle, I couldn't remember.

'One minute it's 4-3-3, then it's 4-4-2. How do England play? What do we do? Kick it long? Play from the back? I don't know what we do.

'I don't get excited about watching England play any more. I'm very patriotic but you look at other qualifiers and they're not games. England versus Malta? Or San Marino? Or the Faroe Islands? Who's interested, really? I can't see any interest.'

Even so, he knows he will be back in the same place on the sofa on Friday, tuned in as England tackle Scotland, hoping for a glimmer of encouragement in the third of the four games with Southgate in a caretaker role.

'Gareth, find a system,' said Redknapp. 'I want to see us play. We've got John Stones, play three at the back, let him break out and overload midfield. Push the full backs on because we've got wing backs and play with two strikers.'

Neither are in the squad for different reasons, but he believes Ross Barkley and Dele Alli prove England can turn out elite footballers.

'Ross Barkley doesn't need knocking down,' said Redknapp. 'He needs picking up. It's no good saying what he can't do. What can he do? He can play. He can see a pass, he's strong, he can run with the ball. He's got great ability, so tell him.

'Go on Ross, go and play, run the game, they can't live with you Ross, you're different class. He'd feel 10ft tall. Don't keep telling him to get back in there when we haven't got the ball, don't do this, don't do that... encourage him.

'Him and Dele Alli, they're 6ft 2in, they can tackle and head it, both strong lads, great footballers. Why can't they play together? Play your good players.'

Redknapp fumes like a true patriot on the issue of the England team and the fiasco he has witnessed from afar since meeting Dan Ashworth, the FA's technical director, in July.

They talked football and discussed options, including whether Redknapp might like the job (of course he would) or be willing to act as a senior advisor for a younger boss (a role which would also appeal at the age of 69).

There is not much he has not seen. His latest book, It Shouldn't Happen to a Manager, a survival guide for managers at all levels, compiles many of his most extreme experiences.

Ultimately, there was no job offer from Ashworth. Sam Allardyce got it and was sacked after one game. Southgate will see out the year and is tipped to become permanent manager, barring a calamity against Scotland.

'Gareth's as good a candidate as there is,' said Redknapp. 'I hope he's a great success. What is he doing well? I don't know. Qualifying for the World Cup? We'll do that. Then what? He's a great lad, was a good player.

'As a manager he hasn't proved anything. Maybe he was at a club, Middlesbrough, where it was difficult to achieve at the time. I don't know. He's taken the Under 21s and they've done OK. I think Gareth fits. There's not a lot around.

'They were talking about Ralf Rangnick, a German bloke I'd hardly heard of. What's he done? Why should he be manager of England? Would the Germans have an English manager? Not a chance.

'Maybe Jurgen Klopp would be OK. I do like Klopp's personality. It looks like the Liverpool players want to play for him. But it should be English. You could go for Sean Dyche, he's getting blood from a stone at Burnley.

'Eddie Howe is an obvious candidate. In two or three years I can see Eddie being England manager.

'At the moment he's happy at Bournemouth, he's at home with a good owner.'

English spirits need lifting after the embarrassment of the Iceland defeat at Euro 2016.

'We were like rabbits in the headlights once it started going wrong,' said Redknapp. 'Oh my God, what's going to happen? Even on the touchline it looked that way. You looked at the bench and you could see the fear.

'It's understandable, when you're in that position, it isn't fun, knowing what you're going to get.

'Roy had an easy ride, really. He went to the first Euros, disaster. He went to the World Cup, absolute disaster. We can't beat Costa Rica. My God, England. Costa Rica haven't got a player who could get in our fifth squad.

'Roy's a good man, a nice guy, I like Roy, but we had three disastrous championships on the spin.

'I'd like to see Gareth bring people in with a bit of personality to work with the squad. The players get fed up with the same boring people around. Someone with a bit of personality can lift the mood.'

Redknapp was overlooked when Hodgson got the job in 2012. He was in charge at Tottenham, locked into an expensive contract, but it seemed at the time to be a classic case of FA caution and the Allardyce affair may deter another England liaison with a self-styled and charismatic character forged outside the system.

'I look at the FA and the people there are very much the same types,' said Redknapp.

'We've gone back to the Charles Hughes days where everybody came through coaching courses and were almost like teachers. I don't see a lot of flair there at any level and a lot of the people involved, if you look at their records, didn't have teams who have looked to play football. Not the way I talk about playing football.

'The game's being run by academics rather than football people. There's not many ex-footballers at the FA. It seems to be schoolteacher types and young academics.

'I see these people when they're 21 years old coaching kids and I think: why aren't they playing? They don't play but they know all the answers and they're coaching the kids when we should just let the kids play, encourage skill, let them dribble.

'Where have the dribblers gone? No-one can beat anyone any more. Everybody, pass-pass-pass-pass. That's all you hear them saying. Not take him on. I don't hear that. I want to see Messi.

'Dimitri Payet set them alight at West Ham. They love him. He's their best player, the crowd's favourite. He's got ability. He can have a shot; he can bend a free-kick, he's a crowd-pleaser.'

Redknapp continued: 'People want to be entertained but everything has become regimented. It's all on the stopwatch. Train and stop.

'I was talking to one coach who tried to take a young kid out to work on his crossing when the sports scientists came running out to stop him because this kid had done his workload for the day.

'That's the way it's gone. Too much organisation. When Andre Villas-Boas was at Tottenham they said you needed A-Levels to work out what he was supposed to be doing. The players didn't even know. It was all done on a computer and it was baffling.

'It's great, we sit at clubs watching ProZone and studying the opposition non-stop. We know everything they do. We're so obsessed with what they're doing we forget to play.

'Can you imagine Matt Busby sitting with George Best, Denis Law and Bobby Charlton for an hour-and-a-half looking at how West Bromwich Albion might play? Do you think Bestie would be interested?

'They'd be thinking, let's just go out and play, we'll murder them. The game hasn't changed. The game's about good players. We're over-rated, managers.'

It might not be the perfect motto to get him back into work but there is plenty to keep him occupied at home on the Dorset coast, where he combines media work with other interests.

He walks his bulldogs, Barney and Lulu, on the beach, plays golf, takes his grand- children to football, pays more attention to his property business and is opening a stables for the dozen racehorses he owns.

And, of course, nursing Sandra back to full health.

'I'd be lying if I said there'd been loads of offers,' said Redknapp. 'I don't speak to anyone and I don't have an agent looking out for me. And I wouldn't be away from Sandra. It might sound corny, but she's my life. I'm a family man.

'I wouldn't want to waste a year of my life schlepping off to China, not even if they offered me £12million a year. It wouldn't appeal to me.

'What would I do with £12m? It won't make any difference to my life.

You can only sleep in one bed and eat one dinner.'

Great article Boo, and probably a lot of truth spoken, I certainly enjoyed the Redknapp years at Spurs, possibly because of some of the players we had at the time, Bale and Modric being the stand outs, but the football we played and some of the results were 'triffic.

I'm afraid however that whilst much of what he says might still be true, he sounds a little like an old man in the vein of 'they don't do football like they used to'....perhaps the game, the modern demands and the players have moved on. I agree that players need encouraging - Ross Barklay style, but I can't see Poch, Klopp, Conte or Pep telling a player to go out there and 'run around a bit' Pav style.

Maybe football is overanalysed and has become too 'scientific' when old school ideas and values should still have more of a part to play, but the evidence from Harry's last spell at QPR, when he essentially had decent players, might prove otherwise. Ultimately I felt that he jumped ship, using health as an excuse. I didn't like that and the fact that, by his own admission, he hasn't had any significant offers perhaps speaks volumes.

I wish him well in what appears to be his retirement.

Rose and Walker were immense last night which was lucky for England because the fifty million pound man Stones was pants as was Cahill, Lalalalalana got MOTM from Goddle, I disagree, which is not unusual as I think he is a plonker, he was a god with the ball at his feet back in the day, a joy to watch, but my mum who is 95 now, I know because she phones me several times a week to tell me that, yes she has a better footballing brain than Goddle.

Sterling got right on my tits, he is a selfish, cheating little cunt. If he had passed the ball a couple of times or stayed on his feet instead of rolling around on the floor England could have got 6. Three nil sounds good, but I wasn't impressed much, as everyone knows my football knowledge ranks alongside my understanding of quantum physics, but I thought that the sweaties could have nicked it up until the 3rd goal which understandably knocked the fight out of them. It would be interesting to calculate the team values, I have an idea that the Scotland side would be around £4.50 against England's Squillions, the only 2 jocks my brain recognised were Snodgrass and Fletcher, funny thing is that I thought Snoddy was really old, but he is only 29.

So, England beat the 57th ranked side in the World, OK, big deal. Southgate will probably now get the job once the jizz has dried off in the media, but was it that good? Nah, I don't think it was, if Rose and Walker had been tactically unavailable last night then Gareth would be lining up at the job center this morning.

Dear Gareth,

We've got an increasing injury list here at Spurs and since we've been kind enough to release all of our players to the International team for the Euro 16 debacle and subsequent matches, rather than making up fake illnesses and such, like Fergie, Mourinho and Liverpool used to do...can you please do us favour and give our match winning full backs a rest this evening, along with Mr Dier our influential midfield star. I know that doesn't leave you with very much, but without the core of Spurs players over the past year, you wouldn't have had very much anyway and it's only Spain after all.

Thanks in anticipation.

Mauricio.

Great, so there's only one left back in the country is there? Why isn't Ryan Bertrand getting a game? Or any other English bloke....and what about Bournemouths new Superhero Jack Wellshite, can't Dier have a break....? Bloody ridiculous its a friendly for fuck sake, I get playing for your country and all that but if one of them gets injured I'll be well pissed off.

I can't be and see to watch it but a win for England would look good on Southgate's cv for his application further England job so he's not gonna rest his key players.

Unfair on us.

I wasn't going to bother watching this but there's nothing much else on and it's turned out to be a good tactical battle and decent game. First time I've seen England playing a proper press and doing it well, especially against a good team. Danny Rose is fast becoming a properly good footballer both in attack and defence, Dier looks composed as well. Sterling is even having a good game!

I turned it on and we were 1-0 up! Pleas tell me it wasn't a fluke (I haven't seen a replay yet).

Overall quietly impressed but then we all know friendlies and qualifyers are not where England struggle so I'm not counting my chickens, also Spain have really come back into it since Lallana went off and Walcock came on so I can see them getting one back!

Are you up to speed yet lol, Vardy bought a penalty for 1-0 and has since scored a great diving header for 2-0....Walcock is being just that at present. Still a good game
