First of all, I would say, most of us were pleased to be drawn against Ajax as opposed to Barcelona but knew very well that it was going to be an extremely difficult tie..
Secondly, even if we were at full strength, it was going to be a challenge.
This young Ajax squad is like a younger version of what Poxh's teams aspire to.
They're talented, fearless & like to demonstrate it.
We were paper thin on available numbers which included Skipp, KWP, & Foyth.
As the game evolved, it was very evident that if we didn't do something to counteract Ajax's
Vert's injury was unfortunate but it allowed for some adjustment. The insertion of Sissoko changed the dynamics. as our midfield was previously being over run. Wanyama was way behind the pace but not his fault. He was only in the team out of necessity. He still needs time to get up to speed after injury. Dier would not have been able to keep up. It really shows how important Sissoko is to us. If only his first time volley at the end of the first half wasn't curling away from the net. His confidence would have gone through the roof.
It's a shame we didn't get a more favourable result but I'm encouraged by our 2nd half performance. Throw in Son & have Dele play more advanced & we will be far more competitive.
Ajax is a joy to watch. It's the way football should be played.
Enjoy it while you can because the vast majority of their first team players will be picked off so quickly this summer..
Their last CL game together will be the next one.
