When I first started work I was earning £15 a week, a ticket to football cost me about 50p, a pint of beer was 14p.
So, from my weekly wage I could buy 32 football tickets or 114 pints of beer - I had to give my mum a quid or two of course, but for the sake of this argument let's ignore that.
If you work on an average ticket price of say £70, seems about right when you take the different categories into account, you would need to be earning £2,240 per week to buy those 32 tickets - that would be nice. To buy those 114 pints of beer at say £4.00 these days. you would need to earn £457 a week, which is probably more than most 16 year olds earn, but as beer is not good for you it's probably a good thing.
Beer has gone up massively, it is a national disgrace, but looking at those figures football tickets have gone up 5 times more than beer, what the actual fuck? I remember when you didn't need to think about if you would have enough money for going to see a game of football, someone in the pub would say let's go and we would, it was about the cost of 2 1/2 pints (which would be about £10 today). Today you really have to think, can you afford to eat, pay the electricity bill or your bus fare to work if you paid all that money to watch some blokes kicking a ball around.
It's really sad seeing the game of the nnormal working class bloke being turned into the game of the wealthy.
