Apparently the explanation was that even though Kane's body was behind Emerson's, the ball was microscopicly behind Kane where Emerson headed it. When I looked at the freezeframe it looks even at worst.

But once it goes backwards off Emerson, Kane is onside.
This is then amplified by the fact that the ball reaches Kane after it comes off the defender.
If it takes VAR four fucking minutes to reach a decision that is questionable at best then surely VAR has overstepped its boundary and is not fit for purpose?

I've just seen a different version which claims that the reason was that the deflection off the defender was ruled accidental so it never trigged a 'new phase of play' which meant Kane was offside.
I assume it means that if the defender had somehow deliberately touched the ball and Kane had intercepted it and scored, the goal would have stood.

And I have just learned you can be adjudged offside even if the ball is played backwards.

How can you be offside if the ball is played backwards? HOW? You're behind the ball! They really screwed us. It would be one thing if the ref ruled it out but they really had to come up with some shit to chalk that out. Every phase of it is razor thin. It's not even clear Kane was in front of his defender. The lines they drew were ridiculous.

Stop whining. We should have beaten them three times over. It isn't the ref, VAR or anyone else's fault. It is our fault. Dier x2 or 3 goals he should have scored. Bentacour had one on a plate 8 yards out.

We:
A)were rubbish for the most part, totally played off the park in the first half
B)had decent chances nevertheless and should’ve beaten them comfortably
C) got fucked by a very questionable VAR decision that it’s OK to moan about
D) all of the above

True. If you don't bother even playing the first half and only lift your output when chasing the game then you get what you deserve.
But that VAR call was as dodgy as fuck. Mind you, we've gotten away with some dodgy VAR stuff at times too. That Llorente goal in the CL semi came flush off his arm.

I suppose you could spare a thought for Atletico Madrid. The referee had blown up for full time in their match against Bayer Leverkusen which ended 2-2 and eliminated both teams from the Champions League.
VAR then alerted the referee to a possible handball by a Leverkusen player in the area and he subsequently awarded Madrid a penalty in the 99th minute which was saved. If it had been converted, Madrid would have gone through.

The Atletico match was bonkers. Made ours look run of the mill. The one thing I would say is that I don't trust VAR in Europe. Do I think they have an agenda? Most certainly. While I hate VAR in the PL, at least it is applied "fairly," for good or bad.

In addition to that, we benefited from probably the most famous VAR reversal of all time in the same game--the goal that was ruled out bc Sterling was fractionally offside. Giveth and taketh away, etc.
Saying that, I hate VAR. As I see it, any benefits it has (and I don't deny there are some) are outweighed by the harm it does to the flow of the game.

Things I can't disagree with:
- The offside decision was correct according to the letter of the law
- The law is stupid
- Kane was robbed
- Kane was anonymous for 94 minutes
- Sonny is a tremendous player
- Sonny is saving himself for either the World Cup or modelling career
- Bentancur makes loads of mistakes
- Bentancur works his bollocks off to correct his and everyone else's mistakes
- Bryan Gil needs to get more minutes
- Lucas needs to get no more minutes
- We didn't deserve to win
- We won't win unless Conte shuts up and lets the players do their thing instead of listening to his incessant instructions

I agree with all of these except (maybe) the point about Lucas. To me he looked like a player that's been short on game time and I actually think he'd be OK with a proper run in the side. But it's irrelevant--he probably won't feature for us in any case.
Of everything you've said, Kane's anonymity and Conte's overcoaching seem the most alarming issues. The issue with Kane is especially bad because we kind of rely on him to play two positions, the 10 and the 9. When he's not seeing the ball, we are basically paralyzed, in no small part because the knock-on effect is that Sonny doesn't get the ball in space. The issue with Conte's tactics and sideline coaching is two-fold:
1) the players look like they're overthinking things, and are scared to fuck up;
2) our system basically depends on our weakest, or at least our most inconsistent players--our WBs (on both ends of the pitch) and the midfield 2 (in possession).
Obviously, if Conte would just listen to me, everything would be sorted out.
