I just bought a triffic little gizmo called a 4GEE Wifi Mini so Mrs D can do internet stuff when she goes up North to visit her dad who sadly is on his last legs in a care home.

We hardly ever use our mobile phones, just prepay 3 mobile sims, I put £20 on mine 2 years ago and I've still got 9 quid left, so a contract with data would be pointless. This new gizmo works as a wifi hotspot on 4G is fast as fuck and cost £90 for the box and 12 months of 2gb data every month, result! You can connect 10 fucking devices to it. We can use it Spain when we go house hunting, I can use it any fucking where and so I may be joining the 21st century.

Another techy thing I bought recently was a USB 3 HDD docking station, I had a load of old USB 2 external disks that were slow as a slow thing, so I took them out of the enclosures, lobbed the power supplies away and bunged them into this doodah. It has 2 bays so you can clone disks really easily.

Another result! Fast as fuck as they are 7200 spinners on USB 3 and I now have 3 x 3tb disks that I was going to lob in the recycling.

Bluetooth! Why didn't anybody tell me that I could connect my phone to the Bluetooth gizmo in my car? I've been picking up Mrs D from Bristol airport a few times and I have had to stop and call her back when she calls to tell me she's landed. Last time I found out that I could magically make my phone talk to my fucking car and I just press the phone button on the steering wheel to answer calls - I wondered what that button was for.

This tech stuff is magic.

Mate I paid 9 ingerlish squids for a fucking wireless magnetic car charger....

The absolute clitoris of the bitch it is.

Phone magneticifield itself to the gizmo to sit nice and proud right where I can see the thing for looking at maps (and porn on the go). Then I tell the fucker to navigate to (or what porn to watch) where I want and it does it without pressing shit... clever little cunt.

This terminator stuff is happening round us and it's great.

I know! Mrs D has even got a big white box doodad in her part of the house that makes clothes clean! What the fuck is that about? This technology stuff is going a bitt too fast for me.

Did that bastard fucking spell checker change 'wanking' to 'banking' mate? I hate it when that nazi spelling fucker does that. If so then you are really technically challenged, I'd ask @Thfcire for some tips or just google 'Freemans Lingerie' - and you will see pictures of ladies in bras!

It's about time! Hacker's heaven Flash is in the bin where it belongs.

The BIG tech news has to be Apple's new M1 chip, this is the biggest game changer in tech for donkey's years. I have been an Apple fanboy for decades, I like not having to fuck around with registries, virusses and all that bollocks and as a proper code monkey a system built on Unix, a proper operating system is just the ticket for me. Doing tech support for Mac machines and networks was money for nothing when I used to have a proper job, fucking Dos and fucking Windows - yukk!

Now, this M1 Silicon doodah is the absolute bollocks of the dog. It beats the bollocks off of Intel, the power and speed of that little fucker for the power it consumes and heat it doesn't is incredible. It has been hard resisting the temptation to buy a 8gb Mac Mini to replace my server and laptop, but I will wait a month until the 16gb models arrive then for around a grand I will have the equivalent of a 20 grand Mac Pro, nice!

I am an Apple loving Varna, but I don't got no Ipad, iPhones, iPlods or none of those things. I have got proper Apple 'puters. Yer new slab probably uses an ARM chip (Advanced Reduced Instruction Set Computer) - like the new Mac Mini wot I am getting as soon as the 16gb version gets to Spain, ARM chips are good and will beat the bollocks off of most Windoze based PCs. Interestingly they used to be called Acorn RISC (Reduced Instruction Set Computer) because they were invented, like everything that is good in the world, in the UK by Acorn Computers. Yes it is true! I had an Acorn computer back in the 80's, and a Sinclair Spectrum and a Commodore 64 - it wasn't 64 bit, it had 64k RAM! We were proper coders back in those days, none of this namby-pamby stuff these days with graphics on yer monitor, you either had orange numbers and letters on your screen or green.

I know nothing about ‘tech’ but Orange numbers or green numbers has made me smile. I remember looking at those screens when I worked for NCR....the numbers were orange, was that good. Something called UNIX was all the rage at the time I think.....might very well be wrong it was about 1985

Dorset you are a man after my own heart! A big lover of OSX but IOS can go fuck itself, how can they get it so badly wrong?!

Keep the updates coming regarding the Mac Mini M1, sounds interesting. My MBP (2012) is just about to fall over so a new machine could be on the cards soon.

My 'new' mac Book Pro is a mid 2015, blimey where did those 6 years go? I have used it as a desktop 'puter since I got it, 2 external monitors, proper keyboard and mouse and hundreds of external 4 and 5tb HDDs (OK, not hundreds, 8). The MBP is still going strong but I need a new M1 based machine obviously. Like the number of guitars I need, this concept can not be explained to Mrs D. The new M1 Mac Mini will become my media server, desktop 'puter and the old MBP will be used as a laptop, she has a Macbook Air laptop, so why can't I?

One of the things I love(d) about Apple 'puters is the ability to boot external disks, I have a couple of 32 bit Apple OSses for olden days stuff, my MBP is running through an external copy of Catalina on a SSD, El Capitan is on the internal HD. This probably wont be possible on the new M1 chips, yeah some nerds say they have done it but the new chip will only run Big Sur and the hoop jumping to boot a different OS on an external SSD will be many, an olden days spinny HDD will just laugh at you!

So, although this new chip is the bollocks of the dog, Apple have taken a backward step in forcing folks to use Thunderbolt SSDs to make bootable clones and only allow Big Sur to run on the M1. A bootable backup clone is even more important now because these modern macs have everything nailed onto the motherboard, if your disk fails (the most likely lump of tech for a catastrophe) then your machine is a paperweight. So a couple of 250gb Thunderbolt SSDs will be needed as well as a nice new mac Mini! Last century I used an old iMac for about 4 years when the main HD failed by booting it from an external clone.

I don't ever store any of my data on the disc that runs my operating system, so the smallest SDD will do me, Apple charges big wonga for disk and RAM upgrades so I'll just be getting the 16gb RAM upgrade and sticking to the 256gb disc. I always use external drives for all my data with a stupid amount of backups - my photos are on my main data HDD, backed up locally to 2 backup drives, backed up on Google Drive, Dropbox and SYNC.com! I need to review my backups strategy! BTW if you want a nice private backup service SYNC.com is based in Canada and you can store stuff you don't want the feds looking at because they have nice end to end encryption and they don't even know what you are backing up, I think 2tb costs me about €80 a year? I wouldn't keep 'private' stuff on iCloud, Google Drive, Dropbox or any of the other big systems the feds can wander around at will.

Interesting stuff. I don't have the wonga for all that but managed to convince the missus a Nas was a good idea so have been able to move all the crap sorry 'media' on to that this keeping the mbp as light as possible, also got a few old school HDDs in enclosures knocking around with really old stuff - mainly old artwork PSD files etc the Nas plus Google (1.59 a month!) Is fine for now but that sync.com does sound good.

Just been given a del d610 laptop by a neighbour...its however locked to some type of windows account, work system.

It'd Utd be great for the littlun to do her home schooling on so if there is a way I can get into it and reset it it will be utilised.

Any help appreciated.

Oooh could you be a bit more vague? By locked do you mean password locked, bios locked, a big fukoff padlock and chain? Can you boot the fucker, if so what happens and what is the problem? Does the laptop have a kosher Windows system on it? You can normally just reset most Windoze systems to the default OS state ( or throw them in the fucking bin because they make me puke). I think if I remember rightly you just poke the shift key while starting them and you get an option to Troubleshoot then reset the fucker - I'm sure Mr Google will know more.

Right.... please bear in mind I don't know what a bios is so potentially I would find a fuck off padlock easier...!!!

Oh and correction it is a Dell Latitude D610

20210108_161248.jpg

Does this help...

I see its windowsXP Professional sneeks...!!!

Oh and no I don't know who Peter A is as that ain't my neighbour... I'd imagine crims go about doing this shit all the time when they've jacked a laptop...!!! I havent BTW... honest gov...!

I believe it was an old business issue laptop so will probably have some type of specialist software on it for whatever it was it was used for... I reckon it must be a good 10 years old...

If its fucked ill donate it and the laptop recycle people will have it... but if the nipper can use it it would help with the home schooling...
