I believe some time this season he will become out longest serving manager since The General `76-`84 overtaking El Tel `87-`91 and OFC Enic`s longest serving manager Arry `08-`12 198 games. Poch has now managed over 150 currently. way short of burkinshaws 431.
He's magic you know.

Yes @J.spurs , but as I am sure football genius and proper Spurs fan Moe will point out, he ain't all that is he? He STILL lags behind the mighty Tim's League win percentage, but if he manages 26 wins this season he will overtake even that master of tactics, then he might be half of all that. If he wins 32 games then he will overtake Frank Bretell's record and maybe become three quarters of all that.

Let's not get carried away, just because he gets us our best ever PL finish and points and goals scored and defensive record doesn't mean he is all that does it?

I think the culprit might actually have been our Spurs 'fan' and font of all knowledge from North Wales.

It's unlikely he's reading much of this however, having most likely drowned in his own jizz from Ben Davies goal last weekend.

That tough love section on Harry Kane is unbelievable. Fair play to them both. Poch for saying it like it is and Kane for stepping up to the plate. The house closer to the training ground is pure dedication.

I love our wee team!

What a fantastic read.
Thanks for sharing that Skiathos.

Something to be so proud of as a Spurs fan.
I'll wager that there must be some deep down envy amongst some rival fans.
There's something really special here: it's an extraordinary genesis.
While it's a footballing genocide within many other clubs.

Bloody hell, I've genuinely never felt this much warmth towards my club. I was too young in the 80's to truly appreciate things, so the few years under Harry ranked as my favourite as well as the big cuddly bear who was impossible not to love but this guy and the way he's developing this group of players, just supercedes everything.

I just pray we get 2 more years at least with this group.

I also want this for Christmas !

Wonder where all the doubters have gone that were screaming for his head when he first came, are now ? I know there are still many Spurs fans that enjoy the doom and gloom and are actively waiting to shout 'told you so' if we slip up...in fact I suspect quite a few clubs in the league are waiting for our 'bubble' to pop and for us to return to being little old Spurs who should be scrapping around between 8-6 and keeping out of the way of the big boys.

Screw them.

Poch has been nothing but pure class since he arrived at the club. 80's history for this club is nothing but history I read online, I grew up watching in the 90's...in fact after watching in the 90's I'm shocked I'm still a Spurs fan  My amazing memories and nights of glory in CL is being created right now for my generation. I personally can not wait to go to the home game against RM. If anyone would have told me that I would be at my 'fake home' watching my beloved club play in the CL against RM, well, I would have never believed it.

It's all down to the boss man Poch and I hope I grow old watching him grow old at the helm of this club.

Now if only we can tie this particular group of players to this club....o_O

It numbers among the many construction projects at Tottenham Hotspur but, perhaps, it is the one to have drifted under the radar. The London club have committed £30m to the building of a 45-bedroom player hotel on a site adjacent to their Enfield training ground and the rationale is illuminating.

Mauricio Pochettino and his staff are obsessed with marginal gains, with new angles and the creation of the optimum environment, and the private player accommodation lodge, as it is officially known, is another example of the growth that they are seeking.

When it is completed next spring the players will be able to stay there on their return, for example, from European away ties in the small hours of the morning, rather than have to drive home. They would then be on site and that bit fresher for training later in the day. It is a small detail but one Pochettino and the club believe can add value. Recovery after matches is a key area and good sleep is the No1 facilitator of it.

The lodge will feature a medical suite which includes hydrotherapy and rehabilitation facilities, and it will ooze five-star luxury. At the moment the players rest in the recreation room at the training centre in between double sessions. They will switch over to the lodge once it is ready.

Manchester City have something similar at their training ground and so, too, do Real Madrid – the club Spurs took on in Tuesday’s Champions League group game at the Bernabéu. The European champions represent the benchmark in so many areas and what thrilled Pochettino and the visiting support went some way beyond the point they gained from the 1-1 draw.

Their team needed to dig in defensively and there were at least two occasions when they could be grateful to Hugo Lloris. His second-half saves from Karim Benzema and Cristiano Ronaldo were world-class.

There were long spells when Real, inspired by the peerless Luka Modric, moved the ball with pace and precision, and looked extremely easy on the eye. But it was no rearguard action from Spurs. They showed drive and composure in possession – nobody more so than the midfielder Harry Winks – and they asked questions of the Real defence. Pochettino was entitled to talk afterwards about a feeling of belonging at the highest level and it has to be noted that he was without a clutch of players, including Ben Davies, Victor Wanyama, Mousa Dembélé and Dele Alli.

Pochettino showed new angles, new structures, new depth. He described his team as being under construction. This was an occasion to inspire stability and one that highlighted his own development, too. It is fiendishly difficult to second-guess Pochettino’s selections and he is absolutely delighted about that. The loss of key personnel did not restrict him. Paradoxically, it appeared to broaden his options.

“I knew you would be surprised about the starting XI,” said the beaming manager afterwards. “But it’s important to surprise our opponent, to be flexible, to have different ways to play. We can play three or four at the back, one or two strikers, two or three [central] midfielders.”

Tottenham have come to look stronger with a back three and it was no surprise when Pochettino fielded one against Real. But nobody expected to see Eric Dier – surely the symbol of his tactical flexibility – in the middle of it, while Jan Vertonghen accepted a new challenge at left wing-back. It was up front where the real shock lay. Fernando Llorente had started only once since his arrival on deadline day – against Barnsley in the Carabao Cup – and, in truth, his performances had been sluggish and ineffective. At the Bernabéu, alongside Harry Kane in a 3‑5‑2, he shone.

Pochettino judged that it would be his moment and he was right. Llorente had not been fully fit, having endured a truncated pre-season because of a fractured arm. Now, he looked to be up to speed. He occupied Raphaël Varane, allowing Kane to work against the slower Sergio Ramos, and he linked the play and helped to get Tottenham up the pitch.

Llorente ushered in Kane and Christian Eriksen for big chances in the closing stages and he ought to have had a penalty in the first half, when Casemiro bundled into him. Pochettino made a statement by starting with two strikers: he wanted to carry the fight to Real. He also knew that Llorente would bring his experience to the occasion; that the environment was right for him.

What about Winks? He is better known as a No8 but he played in the middle of the central midfield three, with Moussa Sissoko and Eriksen either side of him, which nominally made him the defensive midfielder. But he showed his adaptability, reading the game well and remaining on point with his passing. What a month it has been for the 21-year-old – he made his England debut against Lithuania on the Sunday before last.

When Pochettino introduced Danny Rose in an unfamiliar midfield role with 10 minutes to go, it appeared that he was hell-bent on showing off even more of the strings to his bow – and, possibly, was putting on a show for Real. The Argentinian has admitted in the past that he might like to manage them one day and Pochettino has loved being in the Madrid spotlight this week.

The bottom line is that he and Tottenham are finding new ways of doing things; different strategies to widen the scope of their approach. What stands out is the thoroughness. At the training centre, it is all straight lines and right angles whereas the player lodge will be crescent-shaped – in other words, softer and more likely to promote relaxation. Feng shui is not for everyone. Pochettino is open to anything that gives him an edge.

some stuff on the leader, from the Guardian

By any reckoning, it was an unusual way to celebrate. Mauricio Pochettino reached for a Halloween cookie that had been baked by his wife, Karina, and a dram of the Japanese whisky that had been a present from his assistant, Jesús Pérez. And he tried to process what had happened.

Pochettino: Beating Real Madrid puts Spurs among Europe’s best
Read more
It was late on Wednesday night, Pochettino’s Tottenham had just beaten Real Madrid 3-1 at Wembley in the Champions League – the most eye-catching result of his managerial career – and he was back at home, alone with his thoughts and little treats. Pochettino clicked on a phone message from Pérez, the man he describes as his brother and who can generally be relied upon for perspective and profound comment. It began to sink in.

“Jesús sent me a very kind message,” Pochettino says. “Sometimes, we don’t stop to realise what we are doing, but, in that moment, it touched me. I just messaged him back to say: ‘Thank you. You are a craque. You are top.’ I took a Halloween cookie and a bit of whisky and I put my iPad on the bed. I listened to some Spanish radio about politics in Catalonia. Then, I went to sleep.”

Pochettino feels that a part of him will forever be in Catalonia; he lived in Barcelona during his time as a player and the manager of Espanyol. He has closely followed the situation in the region, as has Pérez, who was born in Barcelona.

But since Thursday morning, Pochettino has been sucked in by football politics. Tottenham’s humbling of a team that was already on the edge of crisis sent the Madrid media into meltdown and you know how it goes from here. The day before the game, Pochettino had predicted that Dele Alli’s best form was coming. The attacking midfielder would be the hero against Real, scoring two goals.

The icy blast of the Madrid rumour mill has now been felt. Zinedine Zidane is in trouble and the club have identified Pochettino as a potential successor to the Real manager. The Argentinian had already aced the first audition two weeks earlier, in the first Champions League Group H meeting between the clubs, when he showed his tactical flexibility and his team left the Bernabéu with a 1-1 draw. The Wembley win was something else and Zidane was magnanimous enough to say Spurs had been superior.

How does it feel to be discussed as a Madrid manager-in-waiting? Pochettino has previously made it plain that, because of his Espanyol history, he could never manage Barcelona. Pride is one of the emotions. “When you win against Real Madrid or have good results in the Champions League or the Premier League, it’s normal that we are in the spotlight if a big club wanted to change something inside,” he says.

“For me, it only produces a big satisfaction. I feel proud about Tottenham and I feel proud about the players. In the end, that situation happens because the players are performing well, scoring goals and we are winning games.”

Pochettino is sufficiently streetwise to know suitors are a good thing; they represent validation and no one in any walk of life is advised to chase them away. “I don’t want to lie,” he says. “Always, I want to be honest and I say: ‘I don’t think about tomorrow. I don’t think about next season.’ Because it doesn’t depend only on me, it depends on many circumstances. And it’s so important to be respectful and prudent, cautious and intelligent.”

It is when Pochettino considers what he has at Tottenham, what he is building, that the music starts to play in the ears of the club’s fans – and those of Daniel Levy, too. The chairman has hit the jackpot with a manager who does not demand massive transfer budgets and is happier to make the difference with his coaching and man management, with nurturing homegrown players.

“The most important club in the world is Tottenham,” Pochettino says. “And it is the best club in the world. I need to feel like this and that emotion is real because I cannot be fake. It’s too difficult to create the trust if you don’t really believe and it’s not real, that emotion. Today, Tottenham is in my head 100%. Today, I do not change Tottenham for another position in the world because I am so involved, so focused.

“The club deserves to have people that think only about the club, the fans, the players and the structures – and they provide us with an unbelievable life. It’s important to recognise that. It’s an amazing club and it’s so important for us to pay back the club for the way that they treat us.”

Pochettino said after the Madrid victory that Spurs had proved they belonged at the elite level and he is adamant that he can achieve his ambitions with them. Why? Because he believes in Levy, in the project and, above all, in the overarching notion of the journey.

It almost ended before it started in earnest and Pochettino will always look back on the league fixture at Aston Villa in November 2014 as the turning point. Tottenham had travelled to the Midlands in 12th place and had they lost Pochettino feared it would have been the end for him and his staff. Instead, Harry Kane came on for Emmanuel Adebayor and he scored with a last-gasp deflected free-kick for a 2-1 come-from-behind win. Kane would replace Adebayor in the starting lineup thereafter.

The trends have since been upwards and when there have been setbacks Pochettino and his squad have found the means to recover. He was bitterly disappointed at the Champions League group stage failure last season. This time out, they have qualified for the last 16 after four games. Pochettino had found a collectively weak mentality when he took charge. Now, the players bristle with conviction.

“Before I arrived to Tottenham, everyone said to me: ‘It’s so difficult to have a very good relationship with Daniel,’” Pochettino says. “But I have discovered a great man. I feel that he trusts in me and I trust him. I don’t care what happens around myself because I know very well that I am so happy here and we have a great relationship.

“It’s not about winning or losing – it’s about trust. And when you achieve that at a club like Tottenham, with massive potential, you have to create something together. You have to create a project. I believe in what we are doing and I believe we can build a fantastic team that can achieve all that we dream.”

Pochettino speaks of the excitement that everyone connected to the club can feel about the new stadium, which is being built adjacent to White Hart Lane and should be ready for the beginning of next season. He has previously said that he has started to think about the first match there, but, for him, it is not so much the reality of the 61,000-seat venue. “It’s more to enjoy the journey [to it] with Daniel,” he says. “I speak every day with him and you feel how he cares about everything. It is impossible not to feel proud and be excited about the future of Tottenham.

“That is the key. It is not only the facilities, it is how Daniel is driving that project. A few weeks ago, myself, Jesús and my staff were at the new stadium with Daniel and the architect, and you can feel that it is not just an empty structure – there is a soul and love; there is care in every single detail. That is what excites me the most.”

Pochettino, whose side face the different challenge of Crystal Palace at home on Sunday and then an away north London derby after the international break, can only speculate on how a manager’s life might be at Madrid, but it seems clear that there would be fundamental differences to his job spec at Spurs. “I cannot speak because I was never at that type of club,” Pochettino says. “I can only guess.

“If you read my book [Brave New World], you will understand that maybe I am not a person in football whose motivation is only himself. I love to work and feel part of the project; to share and create something special. I feel very important at Tottenham, very comfortable and I enjoy the journey a lot. Today, I don’t think about a future elsewhere.”
