I'd like to know more about this. From a North American point of view, drinking in the stands is no big deal. There are assholes who take it too far, of course, and they get sorted. How is it different over there? I'm aware of the history with the firms and all that, but would like to get a current perspective from a matchgoing fan.
But if you just say "footy's different" I'll invite you over here to go see a smalltown ice hockey game.

English fans have a habit of throwing their plastics cup of beer in the air when a goal is scored.
People don’t want to be covered in beer.
Thats seems to be one issue, along with people who don’t drink due to their faith, or choose not to drink alcohol.
I do find it strange how people have reacted to this and the concerns. People will drink as much as they want regardless of where they can drink. Even now, most fans will quickly down a pint so they don’t miss much of the game.
I also find it weird how no one mentions how bad drinking at other sports are. The worse I have ever seen is England V Australia in the cricket. All day drinking, people collapsing behind the stands, fights breaking out and abuse everywhere. It was carnage

I would argue that if you can't live without it for 2, 50 minutes stints of your life, once a fortnight, then you'd be better off spending your money on rehab than a football match...
You can drink before, many do, you can drink at half time, many do, you can drink after, many do... Why does it need to be out of the terrace...?
However, getting through Spurs games will probably require some form of "pick me up", so there are exceptions...

What I will say though is that people are idiots, not all, just a small minority. Yet enough to cause huge issues. I don't fancy wearing a pint if we score... especially if VAR ruled it out 4 mins later! Would cause a lot of trouble.
Choice would be good, and I hate the 'nanny state in the UK' although the ban on drinking in view of the pitch works, better to be safe than sorry I feel.
When I was in Bilbao for the EL the stadium was 'dry' as are all Spanish stadia, fair play. I have a few pints before a game (depending on the KO time) and a few after. I don't need a drink during.
