Xabi Alonso could already have a new team in the Premier League

The managerial market has taken an unexpected turn after it was confirmed that Tottenham Hotspur have begun formal talks to sign Xabi Alonso, who only a few hours ago left Real Madrid.

The news, first reported by journalist Fabrizio Romano, places the Basque tactician on the radar in London immediately after his bitter farewell in the Spanish Super Cup against Barcelona. The Spurs’ board has reacted with astonishing speed, seeing the former midfielder as the ideal figure to rebuild a project that appears to have collapsed under the current management. Although his departure from the Spanish capital was turbulent due to the lack of a clear playing identity, his international prestige remains intact in the eyes of the English club’s owners.

Tottenham and the urgency for a change of direction

The Thomas Frank era in north London is at its most critical point, with statistics reflecting a deep crisis in results and a worrying lack of competitiveness. With only eleven wins and twelve defeats across the season, the team’s sporting situation has become untenable for a club of Tottenham’s stature.

Sitting 14th in the Premier League table with just 27 points has triggered all the alarm bells at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium this week. The club believes the current trajectory requires immediate external intervention, and Alonso’s name has generated unanimous support among the club’s top executives. They particularly value his knowledge of English football and his ability to manage dressing rooms with high expectations, despite the difficulties he faced recently at the Santiago Bernabéu. The board believes that the tactical problems he experienced in Spain do not overshadow the potential he clearly demonstrated during his successful spell in German football.

Manchester United have been told to cast aside Xabi Alonso’s loyalties to Liverpool by making a firm approach to appoint him as their next manager, according to one controversial pundit, while a respected source has made clear where the Spaniard’s next job will likely be.

The 2026 trend for sacking high-profile managers continued this week when Alonso was removed from his job as Real Madrid coach after just eight months in the role. Despite having a win percentage rate of over 70%, the Supercopa final defeat to Barcelona in Saudi Arabia on Sunday proved the final straw for club bosses, who immediately stuck Castilla coach, Alvaro Arbeloa, in caretaker charge.

With Alonso back on the market, the 44-year-old is not expected to be out of work for long and, while a return at the season’s end looks most likely, he has already been linked with a string of high-profile jobs.

Indeed, Alonso has already been strongly linked with the Liverpool job amid claims Arne Slot remains under pressure and with a bombshell report just last week suggested FSG were ready to axe the Dutchman after their disappointing campaign to date.

And while those rumours have since been dismissed, Alonso has also been touted as a possible successor to Pep Guardiola at Manchester City, amid claims the legendary Spaniard could walk away from the Etihad at the end of the current campaign.

However, controversial former Sky Sports anchor Richard Keys has urged Manchester United to make a move for Alonso as they look for a permanent successor to Ruben Amorim, who was sacked by the Red Devils on January 4.

Taking to X (formerly Twitter),Keys said: “Perfect. United should move heaven and earth to appoint [Xabi] Alonso,” before adding: “And don’t tell me his time at Liverpool rules him out – [Sir Matt] Busby played for them and [Manchester] City.”

Despite that, another former Sky Sports man, Jeff Stelling, is adamant that Alonso to Old Trafford is a non-starter, making clear his loyalties to the Merseysiders do rule him out.

“In terms of Xabi Alonso, because of his Liverpool links, I don’t see him ever going to Manchester United as manager,” Stelling said on talkSPORT.

Sitting alongside him in the studio, his co-presenter Ally McCoist agreed, adding: “Yeah, I just don’t see it. I really do not see it happening. I just can’t see it happening. I mean, time will tell.

“But that’s not to say that Xabi Alonso will not be in demand. Because he will be in demand. Because he’s proved he’s excellent, particularly in his job at Leverkusen. Absolutely outstanding.”

Xabi Alonso: Source talks up next move amid Man City, Liverpool links

Meanwhile, it’s been claimed that Alonso would prefer to replace Slot as the Liverpool manager to taking charge of Manchester City when Guardiola leaves, according to a German source.

And according to Bayern Space, a reputable account on X with almost 31,000 followers, which has been praised by respected reporters like the Daily Mail’s Merseyside correspondent, Lewis Steele.

The X account often reveals insights from Bayern and was among the first to report Michael Olise’s release clause in his contract at the German club.

The account wrote on X at 9:05am on January 13: ‘Following his departure from Real Madrid, Xabi Alonso held a phone call with Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, a figure with whom he has maintained a close and long-standing relationship for years.

‘The exchange was described as warm, reflective, and respectful, with Rummenigge expressing genuine regret that Alonso’s chapter in Madrid did not unfold as hoped, while once again underlining the esteem in which he continues to be held in Munich, not as a fleeting consideration, but as a figure Bayern Munich have admired for a long time.

‘Rummenigge has long supported the idea of Alonso one day taking on an active role at Bayern, and during the conversation, he made it unmistakably clear that the doors in Munich remain open, both now and in the future, should Alonso ever feel the moment is right.

‘Xabi Alonso is said to have responded with appreciation and respect, fully aware of the standing he continues to enjoy inside the club.

‘Internally at Bayern, the tone and wording of the call were analysed carefully, leading to the prevailing interpretation that Alonso’s next step is unlikely to take him back to Germany in the immediate term.

‘Instead, there is a growing belief that his trajectory is pointing toward the Premier League, with Liverpool and Manchester City viewed as the most realistic destinations. Liverpool is long understood to hold a special place in Alonso’s heart, and even now the sense internally is that his personal preference leans in that direction.’

“And I don’t necessarily see Old Trafford fans accepting him either. Especially if they lost two or three under him.”

Germany manager Julian Nagelsmann is set to emerge as a genuine contender to become the next Manchester United manager amid strong claims he has set his sights on the top job at Old Trafford, while an update from Fabrizio Romano has named two other genuine contenders.

The Red Devils on Tuesday evening confirmed Michael Carrick as their interim manager for the remainder of the current campaign, with the 44-year-old making clear his objectives to secure Champions League qualification for Manchester United over the duration of his 17 games at the helm.

As Fraser Fletcher reported for TEAMtalk, Carrick has already set his sights on taking on the job permanently, with sources confirming that a successful spell in charge will see him thrust into contention for a long-term contract at Old Trafford.

Regardless of how Carrick fares in the hotseat, club bosses – led by chief executive Omar Berrada and director of football Jason Wilcox – are weighing up the merits of various options to take charge in the summer – and this time, there is a determination to get it right and not rush into a decision.

To that end, Fletcher also exclusively revealed that Crystal Palace boss Oliver Glasner – out of contract at the season’s end – is currently the leading contender from five solid options for the job.

However, a new update from Football Insider has thrust a new name into the reckoning in the shape of Germany coach Nagelsmann. The 38-year-old has already taken charge of some 344 senior games in football management, despite his tender years, and having won the title with Bayern Munich in the 2021/22 season.

And according to the report, they claim Nagelsmann, who will lead Germany into the 2026 World Cup finals in the USA, Mexico and Canada, has made it clear he would be ‘interested in taking the job’ at Old Trafford, viewing it as an ‘attractive proposition for the future’, if he returns to club football.

Furthermore, it’s claimed that United’s director of recruitment, Christopher Vivell, is ‘pushing’ for the appointment of his compatriot.

Next Man Utd manager: Fabrizio Romano ‘guarantees’ two solid options

On the subject of United’s next manager, Romano is insistent United will look closely at two specific managers when hiring a permanent boss in the summer, and both do tick a critical box in the club’s mind.

Taking to YouTube to provide his take on the situation, trusted reporter, Fabrizio Romano, confirmed England boss Thomas Tuchel and Roberto De Zerbi of Marseille already feature prominently on United’s shortlist.

“Two names I can guarantee will be considered by INEOS are Thomas Tuchel and Roberto De Zerbi,” declared Romano.

“Today, [I’ve received] many questions on De Zerbi. Let me clarify again, Tuchel is fully focused on England of course, and nothing can be agreed while there is a World Cup coming in the summer, so eventually after that.

“De Zerbi is doing a great job at Marseille; his focus is on Marseille. But these two managers were on the list at Man Utd in the summer of 2024.

“They decided to continue with Erik ten Hag, but before that, at that point, they met with De Zerbi and Tuchel.

“So let’s see what’s going to happen with the season. I’m sure the list will include more names, not just these two, but these two are appreciated.”

On the interest in De Zerbi, Fletcher has already confirmed that the Italian, currently the manager at Marseille, has expressed a strong interest in taking the job.

De Zerbi would be fun, and ticks a lot of boxes. He's also, however, very much under pressure at Marseille, and as volatile as he is, he probably wouldn't last a season and a half unless there were drastic changes.

There is only one correct answer as the who our next manager should be, and he's not available until after the world cup. Would be fine with a caretacker once we're knocked out of CL, but hoping we don't make another terrible hire.

Now till June: Harry
From then on: Poch

If we don't make a change now, we're going to be in a relegation fight. These players are not up for it under Frank. I think we have to twist...

I think Poch also has enough 'credit in the bank' with the fans as well that we'd probably be ok with it taking time for him to sort out the side and get them playing again. Considering we won't be in Europe next season as well then there'll feasibly be more time to work with the players instead of the usual hectic match-to-match schedule.
