Seems to be talk that him and Lo Celso have been left out of the Argentina squad for the Olympics which I'm fine with. The more players we can have get some proper rest before next season the better.
Who've they got at CB...?

The Spurs legend is a big fan of Romero, who hails like him from Cordoba, and he believes that the World Cup and two-time Copa America-winning centre-back has been harshly treated by the English media, when football.london suggests that the 26-year-old has become more disciplined since being handed the vice-captaincy by Ange Postecoglou.

"I think this is something that the English press have picked up and try to highlight the fact. Some of them say he's committing too many fouls. He has been voted not just the best defender in the Copa America, but the best player in the Copa America. That gives you an idea of how good he is," said Ardiles.

"And wherever he goes, they say it. Messi said he's the best defender in the world. I would say the same thing. He is the best central defender in the world. So yes, I mean in England they say 'Oh, he's a little bit rash'. No, I mean he's a winner and he plays in a certain pace, that involves taking challenges. He's taking a risk.

"After saying that it's some kind of justification in what you are saying, and he has [become more disciplined]."

Then with a smile he says: "I'll tell you a story, this is funny. Against Manchester United at home, I've got Ricky Villa with me. So Ricky said 'we have to go and say hello to Cuti before the game'. I don't go before the game to say hello to people, but yes, no problem.

"So we went and said hello. No problem, and I said to him 'Cuti, be careful, because they are kind of following you, the press, because you are (bangs fist into the palm of his hand)'.

"He says 'I got it, I got it, don't worry'. Then he goes out and in the first minute 'bang'. It was so funny. So he wasn't listening to me very much. He plays in this way where he takes risk but it's wonderful.

"In fact, he could very easily go and play in midfield, a kind of defensive midfielder. He's very good with the ball, that makes him special because central defenders are normally strong, but he's very good with the ball, the passing and his passing ability is very good."

Cristian Romero had the interest of three teams in this transfer market: Manchester United, PSG and Real Madrid. Tottenham responded that they would not sell him. He is essential for Postecoglou. They did not even put a price on him. He will have offers again in the next transfer market when Romero only has two years left on his contract.

Remember when the youths (Kane, Alli, Erikson) used to get new extended contracts every time they scored a goal? Another of those six-years-and-a-handshake contracts for Cuti please Mr. Chairman!

It'll be a 1 year extension at absolute most. That'll give him a shed load more money as soon as he signs and still won't put off Real Madrid if they actually want him.

Heard the question posed on a podcast not long ago: If a defender is good at defending 75-80% of the time, is he actually good?

Romero is very talented, brilliant in the tackle, good on the ball, and seems to have matured in terms of discipline. But he has some unforgivable lapses of concentration. Like many teams these days our system puts a lot of pressure on the CBs not to make mistakes. He has to be better than what we've seen for much of the season.

His main fault imv is ball watching

He was caught out against Leicester letting Vardy in and again against Bright with Welbeck

To be honest I think most centre backs are going to struggle in our formation. They are often left alone as our fullbacks are in the opposition box!. I think it's why Van Der Ven looks so good, he recovers with speed so often.

Romero is quality although has had a couple of brain farts this season, but I think he can be brilliant as he comes into his peak years.

Yeah, the CB has a difficult job in modern football, especially our system.

But a lot of his mistakes don't happen from getting caught too high up the pitch, or from being exposed by lack of cover. He switches off in the box, gets caught ballwatching, loses his man on corners, etc., a lot. These are just basic errors that are a problem in any system.

Saying that he is brilliant at times and like you say, I think he has room to improve and can be consistently brilliant. We've already seen some of this: he seems to have gotten his urge to fly into silly challenges under control.

Do we practice set pieces such as corners or just basic crosses to show how to man mark?

Defensive coach?

Yeah, there is a set pieces coach, or at least one of the staff focuses on that. It's one of the guys that came in this summer, cant remember his name.

So given that you would wonder if they are addressing this ball watching problem as it’s not just Romero although he has been caught out badly twice this season so far costing us vital goals against Leicester and Brighton.

I find it interesting that, to me, he appears to be far more alert & aggressive with our offensive corner opportunities rather than when he is defending them.

Yes that’s true and with Welbeck’s goal on Sunday it was from a cross from the right which should have been dealt with by Bentancur!

But as the cross comes over you can see both Romero and Porro watching it with Welbeck in between them who Rose unchallenged to score!

Still fuming at that one!
