Im not sure about him as a captain or as a reliable player tbh. Up to now he's as much a liability than an asset. However....
If being captain gives him more a sense of responsibility and leadership and maturity on the pitch than hopefully he can change and it can be a clever move from Frank and a positive thing for him and the club.

Would have much preffered Danso. No chance that Romero stays long enough to win any trophies with us.

Huge, huge news. Obviously still means he could be sold if someone ponies up £80m+ but showing that commitment to the club is a good sign.

So many people convinced he would leave after Ange was sacked as well.

We are delighted to announce that Cristian Romero has signed a new, long-term contract with the Club.

Having initially joined the Club on a season-long loan from Serie A side Atalanta in August, 2021, the Argentina international signed permanently the following year.

Named captain by Thomas Frank ahead of the UEFA Super Cup earlier this month, the 27-year-old has made a total of 126 appearances in our colours to date, scoring eight times.

Cristian arrived as the ‘Best Defender’ in Serie A in 2020/21 and helped us to secure a return to the UEFA Champions League in his debut season with the Club, as we enjoyed a sensational second half of the campaign.

A commanding central defender, he was appointed vice-captain alongside James Maddison in August, 2023, and an impressive campaign saw him make 33 Premier League starts, scoring on five occasions. He was also shortlisted for the Premier League’s Player of the Month award for October, 2023.

Captain for the final four matches of our run to European glory last term, ‘Cuti’ played a vital role in our UEFA Europa League success and claimed the competition’s Player of the Season award. He was named Player of the Match in the Final while he also earned a place in the 2024/25 UEFA Europa League Team of the Season alongside team-mates Guglielmo Vicario, Pedro Porro, and Dominic Solanke.

At international level, he made his senior debut for Argentina in a World Cup qualifier against Chile in June, 2021, and now has 44 caps to his name for La Albiceleste, scoring three times.

Cristian has enjoyed huge success with Argentina, helping his country to the 2021 and 2024 Copa America titles, the CONMEBOL-UEFA Cup of Champions and, most notably, World Cup glory at Qatar 2022.

This one I wasn't sure on. Really had doubts about him staying.

Only problem with a hot head captain is the squad may follow suit. I prefer a calming presence with the arm band

Frank was really big on culture at Brentford—he famously had a “no dickheads” transfer policy. I agree about the on-field stuff, but I think Frank would’ve based it on off-field leadership as much as anything.

Related, I noticed, maybe a minor thing, before the Burnley game, the players geeing up the group in the pregame huddle were Porro and Vicario. Didn’t look like Romero said anything.

There's a lot of potential leaders in the squad... Cutti, Pedro, Vic, Mickey, Bents... All got a bit of what I think it takes to be a leader by example...

Was it in English?

Nothing Romero said is wrong. I think it's a big problem in football in general, not just at Spurs, that the suits who make the decisions don't face the scrutiny that the manager does. Thirty years ago when the manager was actually a manager, with control over most aspects of the football side of the club, it was probably fair. Today guys like Frank are basically head coaches. Maybe they have some sway over the direction of the club but not much. I don't feel sorry for them because they make lots of money to do it, but it means the fans get no answers. It's plain for anyone to see that the decision-making at the club has been poor, yet only one man is really regularly held accountable, whether its Ange or Frank or the next guy.

I wasn't really aware of the happenings but was Romero's social media post in response to the boo's Frank got after the match? I say this because of the heated interaction between VDV, Porro, & Palhinha.

And now there's word, if that's to be believed, that VDV wants a managerial change in order to re-sign with Spurs.
I think they also reported that he was wanting to see ambition from the club. Sacking Frank seems a certainty now but unless it’s combined with a strategy moving forward it’s just binning off one more guy to be replaced by another.

True.
But who's going to come up with this new strategy ? That's my worry...
IF Vdv is happy to stay with a new contract. Then we pay him 200k a week over 6 years. No more fuckin about with penny pinching shite. Pay him what he's worth and show the rest of the PL that Spurs are competing. Make the statement that makes everyone sit up and build the team around that.
Yeah..☹️..then my alarm clock will go off.

How much would we get for him ? Seriously ? Or any nearest offer. He's probably the worst example of a captain you could have.
He's not even a great defender ffs...

I feel like the numbers discussed when Atletico were interested were in the high 50s-low 60s.

I wouldn't refuse £60m....I'd be happy if we threw Archie in there with VDV for now until we got someone serious in. Why not try for Guehi ?

Don't know why we haven't moved for Mainoo btw...waiting to be picked up...

You're obviously forgetting Danso, the modern-day Bobby Moore...

Now that Amorim's gone I bet they'll keep Mainoo. He was a casualty of the 3-4-3.

Yeah, we should've nabbed him before this. Still think we should make an enquiry though.
As for Danso....yes....yes I did forget him.........completely.
